Chapter 4: Whispers Beneath The Song

1075 Words
The sun cast soft golden rays across the floating courtyards of the academy. I sat at the edge of a marble balcony, my legs dangling freely as I watched the drifting clouds below. The air shimmered faintly, as if it, too, pulsed with the rhythm of a song only a few could hear. I traced circles on the stone with my finger, letting the quiet wrap around me like a blanket. "Lara!" Ammara’s voice called from behind. "Breakfast! Halika na!" I turned and smiled faintly, following her down the spiraling stairs lined with vines that hummed softly when brushed. It had been two weeks since I arrived at the academy. I still didn't speak, but most had accepted my silence as part of who I was. Well most, not all. As we entered the Grand Hall, students parted. Some stared, others whispered. They all knew about the mysterious girl with violet eyes and snow-like hair. "Don’t mind them," Ammara said, linking her arm with mine. "They’re just intimidated. You’re beautiful and... different." I smiled gently, but inside, there was a weight I couldn’t shake. That day, a message echoed through the halls a chime followed by the voice of Headmaster Kael. "All Sonique-bearers of the Top Tier will assemble in the Crescent Arena for today’s Exhibition Trials. All students are invited to watch." Ammara squealed. "Oooh! Exciting! Lara, you have to come with me. You’ll get to see Vince perform! And maybe Zeina! And Yves! They're legends!" I tilted my head. Exhibition Trials? She practically dragged me down the corridor. The Crescent Arena was a massive, amphitheater-like structure carved into one of the floating islands. Crystals hovered in the air, amplifying sound and vision. The place was alive with chatter, cheers, and musical hums. Everyone took their seats quickly. I sat quietly beside Ammara, my eyes scanning the arena floor. Then I saw him. Vince. Tall, regal, and calm. His black and gold uniform shimmered under the sunlight. His hair was a dark wave that framed sharp features, and his eyes deep and unreadable. Girls sighed around me. Even boys watched him with a mix of awe and jealousy. "He’s the child of Senaiha Elioterio," Ammara whispered. "She’s the High Cantor of our world. Siya ang namumuno." Vince stood alone in the center of the arena, his hands behind his back, posture perfect. The crowd hushed. A gong rang. "Trial 1: Adaptive Harmony." A student was summoned to face him. The challenger a flame Sonique-user let out a fiery symphony that danced across the field. Vince didn’t move. He simply listened. Then, a spark flickered in his palm. Fire. Gasps filled the arena. "He copied it?" someone muttered. But it wasn’t just a copy. Vince commanded the flame with elegance, control, and intensity that outshone the original. He bowed slightly. "Yield," the other student whispered, stepping back. Cheers erupted. Ammara jumped up. "Ang galing niya!" But I was focused on something else. For the briefest moment, when Vince used his power, I felt a vibration deep inside me a note so low and ancient, it echoed through my bones. I held my scarf tightly. Other matches followed. Zeina and Zach, twin earth Sonique-wielders, danced with roots and stone, their movements perfectly synced. Yves turned mist into jagged ice, freezing illusions mid-air. Tasha, my dormmate, summoned waves that shimmered like glass, controlled with graceful rage. Each battle was more like a performance a symphony of power. But Vince never lost. At the end, Headmaster Kael stood. "The next challenge will not be battle," he announced. "It will be collaboration. You will pair with others. Build harmony, not just power." I swallowed. Collaborations? Did that mean I had to... perform? I wasn’t ready. Ammara noticed my expression. "Don’t worry. If you’re not up for it, they won’t force you." But her eyes said something else. They were afraid. Not for me. Of me. Later that night, in our dorm, I stared out the window. The stars twinkled like notes on a staff, distant but meaningful. "You okay?" Ammara asked, brushing her curls. I nodded. Tasha was polishing her staff of water. "Don’t think you can avoid performing forever. This place is built on the Song. You can’t hide in silence." I looked down. "Not that I care," she added. "Just don’t embarrass our room." She left shortly after. Ammara gave me a look. "She’s like that. Don’t mind her." I lay in bed that night, the Song pulsing in my veins. It wanted to come out. But I wouldn’t let it. I couldn’t. Because every time I did... The colors came. A week later, classes shifted. Instructors focused on duet harmonies. I was paired with a gentle boy named Elian, who controlled breezes with his flute. He didn’t mind that I didn’t speak. "You just feel the rhythm," he said. "I’ll follow your lead." But when I strummed a single string of the harp, wind burst from the room. The note shook the chandeliers. Elian stumbled. I stepped back, terrified. The teacher frowned but said nothing. Word reached Vince. A Sonique that disrupted others? He watched me from across the cafeteria. I felt it his gaze like a thread pulling at the fabric of my being. He approached one afternoon. "Lara." It was the first time he said my name. His voice was low, controlled. "You don’t speak. But you feel the Song. Don’t you?" I met his gaze. He nodded, understanding something unspoken. "We are the same," he said. But we weren’t. Because he had control. And I was barely holding it in. One evening, during a moonlight chorus where students sang in harmony with nature, an accident occurred. A rogue student unleashed a cursed frequency a chaotic dissonance that bent trees and cracked stones. Screams filled the air. Panic. Until... A note. Soft. Rising. Piercing. A single voice sang. The dissonance shattered. Everything froze. All eyes turned to the center. To me. But I wasn’t singing. Not really. It was the Song. It had broken free. I collapsed afterward. My body weak. My eyes shimmering with faint rainbow sparks. No one spoke. Except Vince. He knelt beside me. "You saved them." I tried to shake my head. But he whispered, "Or destroyed something worse." Then he looked around, making sure no one heard. "Be careful, Lara. The more power you show... the more they will fear you." And fear, in Aethera, was a dangerous note.
