“Is that all you can say? That you’re busy? I just caught you with another man, and you really don’t care? Just a few hours ago you were professing your love for me. Before that, you refused to even let me touch your hand or take a picture with you.” He yelled at her.
“Ugh! You’re so annoying.” She said and then turned to James. “Baby, I’ll see you later after dealing with him.”
She got dressed, and he had no choice but to follow her out of the hotel. They drove home in silence. For him, it was definitely torture, as anger consumed him, but he couldn’t express it. No matter the situation, he wasn’t raised to hit women even in anger, and he didn’t want to be charged with assault or something like that. The scene replayed in his head no matter how hard he tried not to think about it. Her nonchalance upon his arrival into the hotel room, her lack of remorse or apology, and the smug smile on James' face as they left. Glancing at her through the rear view mirror, he had to watch her fix her hair and smudged makeup. He realised she was never who he thought she was. Disgust lingered in his throat. How could she be so two-faced?
He rolled down the window to let air in, as she reeked of s*x with another man and was absolutely unbothered by it. Parking into the garage, he paused, waiting for her to say something. Anything. She got out instead, walking towards the house. He mocked himself bitterly. ‘He had indeed been a fool'. How could he have let her play him so well? Acting was her profession and she used it on him so well that he never even noticed.
“Sabrina,” he called out, no longer using her pet name. "Don’t you think you should explain yourself?”
“Leo, I am terribly exhausted as you can see. Let's have this discussion tomorrow” she said, without as much a glance, as she kept moving upstairs into her room.
He snapped in that minute. She couldn’t even stand to share a room with her own husband, and yet he should just let it go? No! Dragging her down the stairs back into the living room, he demanded an explanation without caring for her irritated expression.
“An explanation is the least you owe me. You’re not as tired as you say, because if I hadn’t met you with James Hardin, you would still be in bed with him right now. I won’t fall for your lies anymore.”
“What do you want to know that you haven't already seen tonight, Leo?” She replied in annoyance.
“It is not about what I saw, it is about why? Why did you do that? Hours after telling me you loved me? You have never allowed me to even hold your hand! You think I don't see the irritation every time I'm around you? I made excuses that you were just stressed at work, but that was just a lie. SO TELL ME WHY SABRINA?”.
“You would have just said that in the car instead of whining like a child! Why are you yelling at me? If you’re so smart, you would have figured it all out by now. You want to know why?” She asked as she walked close to him.
He felt nothing but irritation, so he stepped backwards several inches, staring at her embarrassed face while she tried to maintain her composure. That was just a taste of her own medicine.
“The thing is, Leo, I do not like you one bit. Men like you do not go far before you are trampled to the bottom. It is a secret marriage for crying out loud. There is no love involved! Just mutual benefits. I thought you would get it through your thick skull by now.” She said without mercy, each word piercing through his heart as the truth stared him right in the face.
“Then why did you lead me on, Sabrina? Why the whole games? Why make a fool of me? I would have understood if you said you felt nothing.” he paused, unable to say more for fear of breaking down in tears.
“Men like you are weak, Leo. You need to be given a good rub on the head like a good dog! If I had told you, you would have opted out, and I needed the connections you had. Now, with your help, I am a star. You have your job as my personal assistant, but your pay can be increased. You can do whatever the f**k you want and leave me alone to do same!”
“Since you say I can do whatever I want, I will bring this marriage, you and your lover's dirt, to the knowledge of the entire world, and you will crash till you reach the ground, Sabrina Dalson.” he said with resolve.
He took one last look at her scared expression and walked away, leaving her behind. He had no idea that she had begun to formulate a plan of her own.
The next morning, he awoke with a splitting headache, and he made my way into the kitchen to make coffee. Without even bothering to look for Sabrina, he switched on the television in the living room. His mug hit the floor, shattering into pieces as its contents flowed out. He stood frozen, unable to take his glued eyes from the television either. His face was all over the news. The marriage, everything was on the news. But it wasn't a good thing. He was accused of assaulting his wife when he had never laid a hand on her, despite his anger last night.
“Good morning, husband. How do you like your surprise?” Sabrina said as she walked towards him, and she had her lover by her side.
She still had the audacity to bring her lover to their matrimonial home.
“This is what happens when you dare to bite the hands that feed you. How dare you threaten to expose me and harm my career? Well, I’m way ahead of you. Nobody will believe your accusations now. No one will take your word over mine. You're nobody, and I’m a celebrity.” She continued with a smirk, then her lover spoke.
“The police will be here soon, so do not even try anything stupid. We’re pressing charges against you.”
“You have no evidence to jail me with. I did no crime.”
“I know. But I paid some of the officers very well to keep you in a cell for a few days. That should teach you a lesson.” James replied.
True to their word, the police arrived soon and took him away effortlessly. He tried to deny the assault accusation but was beaten mercilessly in an attempt to bring the ‘truth’ out of him. He clung onto his innocence, even stating the reality of their marriage and how he caught her cheating. It all fell on deaf ears, as some of her fans were illegally allowed in the cell to beat him up for laying a hand on their idol.
It was all so shocking. He had no idea what to do next. After a few days spent without even being allowed to get a lawyer, he was summoned outside the cell. She had come. For what? With her smug smile, he decided it was not to bail him out, but to gloat instead.
“You look even more irritating,” she remarked, waiting for what he was going to say next. When she got nothing out of him, she proceeded to bring out papers from her bag. Divorce papers. “I want you to sign these papers, terminating this sham we call a marriage.” she said, passing the papers to him.
He could see that she had already signed them. All that was left was his own signature before it became official and legal. There was nothing here for him to fight for. She had done the worst to him. The marriage was over the moment he caught her cheating. This was in fact the best decision for him. But it still hurt. He loved her and she just used him.
Taking up the pen, he signed while she picked up the papers with a towel from her bag as if his touch had infected it.
“You will stay here for a few more days. That is your punishment for daring to stand against me. From now on, we do not know each other. Cheers to your little, miserable, pathetic life now, stranger.” She laughed loudly before walking out.
He made no attempt to move from his spot until he was taken away by the guards. He saw the light of day again a few days later. Standing outside the station with the clothes he had on when he was first brought in. He had no phone to contact anyone, he was left with nothing. Sabrina had cleared all their joint accounts and informed him that she had burnt all his belongings in their house. The house documents were in her name, which he stupidly did out of love, so now he had nothing.
Finding the nearest phone booth, he called some of his friends whose numbers I had memorised for assistance. They all claimed they were very busy and hammered on his image as an ‘assaulter’, how it would affect theirs too. He could not get any jobs to do in the city. He was ruined. There was no place to spend the night at.
The rain poured heavily. He sat motionlessly on the pavement outside as it rained. He was angry. Betrayed. Sabrina. His so-called friends and colleagues. His life here was over. The best thing was to leave this city. The only thing of value he had on him was his wristwatch. He sold it off and paid for bus tickets to move several cities away. He had to build a new life for himself. Sabrina would see that he was not weak. Being in love with her only made him weak, but that was done with. It couldn’t all end like this. He must have his revenge on all of them who turned their backs on him at his lowest moment.
