"Evelyn, don't worry. I can help you keep this a secret. Do you want to keep the baby?" Andrew looked into Evelyn's tear-filled eyes and asked gently.
He appeared, after all, too late. The once cheerful Evelyn had lost the happiness she used to have.
From now on, he vowed to protect her.
Evelyn lowered her eyes, her expression unconsciously softening with a motherly tenderness. She gently touched her stomach. "Yes, I want to keep the baby and raise it on my own."
"Alright, I understand." Andrew nodded. "I'll help you, but you still need to get a check-up. Even if it's just for the baby's sake, okay?"
He had this way about him—his kindness made it impossible not to trust him.
"Okay, thank you."
When the examination was finally over, Evelyn walked out of the hospital room, holding the documents Andrew had discreetly handled for her. Outside, there was no sign of Ethan or Linda anymore.
She let out a soft laugh, clutching the papers. It felt like a cruel joke.
She had overestimated her importance to him.
Her health? It never mattered to Ethan.
"Evelyn, where are you headed now? I can give you a ride," Andrew offered, his voice full of concern.
He could see it—Ethan didn't care about her.
The sight of the empty corridor only deepened his anger and pity.
It wasn't hard to see how such a beautiful, kind woman had become so worn down and heartbroken.
Ethan didn't deserve someone as good as Evelyn.
"No need. I'm feeling much better now. I'll just take a taxi and..." Evelyn said, not wanting to impose on him any further.
But before she could finish her refusal, her phone started ringing.
It was a call from her stepmother, Lisa.
"Hello, Lisa," Evelyn quickly answered.
Lisa wasn't someone who usually called unless something serious had happened.
"Evelyn, it's your brother—something happened to him..." Lisa's voice was choked with sobs, barely coherent.
Since the downfall of the Bennett family, Lisa had been struggling to keep things together. But now, with her son in trouble, she couldn't hold back her breakdown any longer. Her sobs echoed through the call.
Evelyn's expression changed. She comforted Lisa briefly before hanging up and preparing to rush to the school.
"Evelyn, what's wrong?" Andrew noticed her anxious expression and guessed something had happened. He grabbed her arm as she was about to leave. "I'll drive you—it'll be faster!"
"Thank you!" Evelyn glanced at Andrew and didn't refuse.
Time was of the essence, and her brother, Ryan Bennett, couldn't wait.
Evelyn followed Andrew directly to the underground parking lot. As his car exited, it passed by a Range Rover parked nearby.
Inside the Range Rover, the driver was answering a call respectfully.
"Sir, Mrs. Ford hasn't come out yet. Should I go up to pick her up?"
If Evelyn hadn't been busy texting Lisa about Ryan's situation, she might have recognized the voice as James, one of the Ford family's drivers.
"No need. Wait for her to come out," a deep, commanding voice came through the call.
The call ended abruptly.
Evelyn had no idea about this minor coincidence.
She went to the school to handle Ryan's situation and learned that because of their father's imprisonment, her brother had been ostracized and insulted to his face as "the son of a criminal".
Ryan, usually a well-behaved boy, had endured it for several days. But when they pushed too far, he finally fought back.
The parents of those kids even had the nerve to demand an explanation.
The Bennett family was already in a tough spot, and their aggressive demands had pushed Lisa to tears.
Evelyn arrived at the school with a firm attitude and demanded the surveillance footage. Thankfully, with Andrew's assistance, both sides reached a compromise eventually.
However, since her brother had thrown the first punch, even though both sides apologized, they couldn't avoid paying compensation.
By the time everything was resolved, the sky had already darkened.
Andrew first helped bring Evelyn's brother and stepmother back home before taking her to Serenity Villa.
"Andrew, thank you so much for today. We've only just reconnected, and I didn't expect to trouble you like this," Evelyn said sincerely before getting out of the car.
Andrew looked into her honest, grateful eyes, seeing his reflection in them. He raised his hand, almost instinctively wanting to ruffle her hair, but he stopped himself, realizing it wasn't appropriate.
Smiling warmly, he said, "Why are you being so polite? Or are you saying you don't see me as your friend anymore? Alright, go on in. You need to take care of yourself—rest more and stress less. If you need anything, just call me," he said, raising his phone as a reminder.
"Okay!" Evelyn replied, feeling touched. She smiled at him before stepping out of the car.
As soon as she entered the villa, it was as quiet as always.
Well, she was used to it by now.
Ethan was probably out on a date with Linda anyway.
She was indeed exhausted, too tired to think much about it. All she wanted was to shower and rest.
"You seem perfectly healthy to me—not so weak that you need another man to carry you to the hospital!"
Suddenly, a cold, mocking voice came from the living room sofa.
Evelyn froze mid-step, turning in surprise toward the man lounging on the sofa with a casual yet elegant demeanor.
Ethan was actually home at this hour.
She didn't believe he came back early out of concern for her health. Maybe Linda wasn't feeling well enough to go out today.
Evelyn ignored his sarcastic tone. "If you were so suspicious, Ethan, why didn't you stay to see the results yourself at the hospital? Or maybe Linda just couldn't wait to leave?"
Her lips curled into a mocking smile.
She was genuinely unwell, but in Ethan's eyes, she was faking it.
As always, whatever Linda said, he believed it.
But he had never believed Evelyn—not even once!
"I'm tired. If there's nothing else, I'm going to rest," Evelyn said, her voice cold and detached. She was too disheartened to argue with him any further.
Ethan's expression darkened at her indifferent tone.
He suddenly stood up and grabbed her wrist. "Tired? You didn't seem tired when you were with another man, but now you're exhausted? Evelyn, have you forgotten who you are? Or are you divorcing me because of that Andrew, your doctor?"
All afternoon, James failed to pick her up. Ethan assumed she'd been at the hospital with Andrew the entire time.
This woman was becoming more rebellious by the day.
Evelyn frowned, stunned at how Ethan twisted the situation to accuse her and drag Andrew into it.
Andrew had only been kind and helpful. She didn't want to cause trouble for him.
Evelyn tried to pull her wrist away.
But the more she struggled, the tighter his grip became, causing her pain.
He didn't care about her at all.
Finally, she gave up and looked him in the eye. "Ethan, I want a divorce simply because I don't want to be with you anymore. It has nothing to do with Andrew, so stop dragging the innocent into this."
Ethan's eyes darkened like a storm, and a cold, mocking smile curved his lips. "So, you're defending him now? Or is this some new trick to get my attention? Am I not enough for you? Fine, then. Tonight, I'll make sure to satisfy you and put an end to all these ridiculous thoughts of yours!"
