"Did we hear the story aright?" I murmured quietly to Nala, "Or is my sister enthralled by a mad liar?"
"There is another possibility that I like even less," she whispered back. "The Sacred Folk have always behaved kindly and wisely toward us, but I have never heard of this particular one... Lao'ue, did Ka'eeneh call him? Might it be that one of the Sacred Folk is so ill-tempered as Ka'eeneh says?"
Again, I felt that cloudless chill. "If so, could he be an outcast from their tribe for that reason?"
"These waters are too deep for me to swim alone," said Nala. "I think it is time we went to see Great Grandmother."
And to that I could only agree.
Great Grandmother was not truly mother to all the families in the tribe, and neither was she extremely old; we gave her that title for courtesy
