Chapter 5 –The breaking point

1098 Words
Lucy didn’t know how she made it through the rest of the afternoon. Her hands shook every time she typed. Her pulse thrummed every time she heard Alex’s deep voice through the glass walls of his office. And worst of all, she could still feel the shadow of his breath against her skin, whispering that undeniable truth: This isn’t over. Damn him. She wasn’t some naive girl anymore. She knew better than to get trapped in his web again. But if that was true, why did her body betray her every time he was near? By the time evening rolled around, she was exhausted—from fighting him, from fighting herself. She needed air. Space. Distance. She gathered her things quickly, hoping to escape before— “Calloway.” Her entire body tensed at the sound of his voice. She turned slowly, hiding her emotions behind a neutral expression. “Yes, Mr. Varela?” Alex leaned against his office door, watching her like a predator who knew exactly when his prey would break. “I need you in my office. Now.” Lucy swallowed hard. He didn’t look like a boss giving orders. He looked like a man with an agenda. And she was walking straight into it. --- **A Dangerous Proposition** The moment Lucy stepped into his office, the tension wrapped around her throat like a noose. Alex was already at the minibar, pouring two glasses of whiskey. She hesitated. “Is this a business meeting or—” “Sit.” Her breath caught at the command in his voice. Alex wasn’t asking. He was daring. And God help her, she took the dare. She sank onto the leather couch, crossing her legs in a show of indifference, but Alex saw right through her. His smirk deepened as he handed her the glass, his fingers brushing hers for half a second too long. Heat crackled between them. Lucy took a steady sip. “What’s this about?” Alex sat across from her, his arm draped over the back of the couch, his body relaxed—a bit too relaxed. “I have an offer for you.” Lucy arched a brow. “I already work for you.” He chuckled. “Not that kind of offer.” Something in his voice sent a shiver down her spine. Alex leaned in, his gaze locking onto hers. “You want to prove you’re unaffected by me? Fine. Let’s test that theory.” Her pulse pounded. “What the hell are you talking about?” “A month. No running. No hiding behind professionalism. Just us. No rules.” Her stomach turned. She barely found her voice. “You’re insane.” Alex smirked. “Maybe. But you’re intrigued.” Lucy clenched her fists. “You think you can just—” “I think you want this as much as I do,” he cut in smoothly. The air between them thickened, charged with something neither of them could control. Lucy’s fingers tightened around the glass. She should say no. She had to say no. But when she opened her mouth, the words wouldn’t come. Because deep down, she knew the truth. He was right. --- **Lines Blur in the Dark** The moment Lucy stormed into her apartment, she cursed herself. Why hadn’t she shut him down? Why did her body betray her every time he was near? She was pacing the living room, trying to get him out of her head, when a knock at the door stopped her cold. Her heart stuttered. No. It couldn’t be. She took a slow, calming breath before opening the door— And there he was. Alex stood in the dim hallway, his tie loosened, his shirt unbuttoned just enough to be dangerous. Her stomach flipped. “You shouldn’t be here,” she whispered. Alex didn’t move. “I should be the last man you let in.” Her pulse pounded. “Then leave.” He took a slow step forward. “Tell me you don’t want this, and I’ll go.” Lucy swallowed hard. Her fingers curled against the doorframe, her resolve crumbling. “I…” But the words caught in her throat. Because she couldn’t lie. Not to him. Not to herself. Alex exhaled sharply, his control hanging by a thread. “Damn it, Lucy.” And then— He kissed her. Hard. Desperate. Like he’d been waiting for this moment for years. Lucy gasped against his mouth, her hands fisting in his shirt, dragging him closer, surrendering to the chaos between them. Alex groaned, lifting her effortlessly, her legs wrapping around his waist as he kicked the door shut behind them. This was reckless. This was dangerous. But God, she didn’t care. Because for the first time in a long time, she felt alive. And she wasn’t sure she ever wanted to stop. Alex didn’t hesitate. His lips devoured hers with a hunger that sent a shudder down her spine. Lucy clung to him as he pressed her back against the door, his hands sliding down her body, gripping her waist like he never wanted to let go. Her breath hitched when he broke the kiss, his forehead resting against hers. “I should leave,” he murmured, his voice strained. “You should push me away.” Her fingers tightened in his shirt. “Then why aren’t you moving?” His chest rose and fell against hers, his control barely hanging by a thread. “Because I can’t,” he admitted, his voice raw. Neither of them moved. Seconds stretched into an eternity as they stood there, tangled in the tension, tangled in something too strong to ignore. Then, just as she thought he might pull away— His hands tightened, and he lifted her effortlessly, carrying her toward the couch. Lucy’s breath came in sharp gasps as he lowered her onto the cushions, his body hovering over hers. His fingers traced her jaw, his gaze dark and unreadable. “Tell me to stop,” he whispered. Lucy swallowed hard. She should. She really should. But when she met his gaze, all she could see was the fire burning in his eyes, the years of tension crashing down around them. And instead of pushing him away, she pulled him closer. Her fingers tangled in his hair, her lips brushing against his in a whisper of a promise. “I don’t want to stop.” Alex groaned, his lips crashing back onto hers, sealing their fate. Because in that moment, they both knew— There was no turning back.
