Chapter two

"Are you still upset with Monty for coming after you at lunch?" I asked Nala while we were on our way to Cappa's Cafe after school.

"It's the audacity for me," Nala said rolling her eyes for the millionth time today.

"Speaking of the devil," the boy we sat with at lunch said

We all turned back and saw Monty trying to catch up to us.

"Hey guys, where are we going?" Monty said still trying to catch his breath

"We?" Nala asked in a whisper

"We," I said looking at Nala "Are going to Carpe Diem Cafe and you can join us," I said to Monty

"Thanks" he replied

"Hey, I know a shortcut we could use, it's right on this road," the boy said again

"Okay, but who are you, and why are you following us around?" Nala asked with a hint of disgust in her tone

"Oh, hi, I'm Fin," he said with the brightest smile I've ever seen

"Okay Fin, why are you following us around?" Nala continued with her questions

"Because we are friends now," Fin said enthusiastically

"What gave you that thought?" Nala said with plain rudeness

"You guys sat with me at lunch," he said with his smile fading

"So?" Nala protested

"You're obsessed with me, wouldn't want to disappoint my fans," he said while leading us down an ally into an old abandoned road

"Sure, just follow the stranger into who knows where," Nala said

"It will be fine, we can trust him" I replied

"Famous last words," she said following us down the ally

"Woah, did you just take us back in time?" Monty asked

Fin turned the corner and it almost seemed like we were in another place altogether, there were old buildings as far as I could see, some were falling apart, while others were in great shape, the road was filled with potholes and covered with dust, there was a post office, a salon, and a bank, it was almost like we were hallucinating the whole place.

"I wish," replied Fin "this is old Everfall Main, we live in new Everfall Main" Fin explained

"This place is old, like 1900's old, I use this road all the time when going to Cappa's or school," Fin told us

"This place is pretty cool," I said while my attention drifted to the old buildings and roads

"It's also a great place to kill and hide four bodies, would you look at that, we are four bodies!" Nala said sarcastically

"Come on, I'll show you around" Fin offered

When Fin turned round and attempted to jump over an old rusty mailbox, he hit his leg and flipped over the mailbox, he landed with a loud thud. We all stood in shock trying to process what just happened.

"Is he hurt?" Monty asked

"Is he alive?" Nala asked

"Is he...laughing?" I asked perplexed

Fin stood up laughing so hard that tears were rolling down his cheeks, he dusted himself and started walking towards us, he again tripped over a small package that must have come from the mailbox, he picked it up and ripped open the brown paper packaging while we gathered around. It was a dark wooden box that was covered in different symbols which I guess when deciphered mean something. Fin lifted the latchet and opened the box.

"Seriously," I said

"I expected more," said Nala

"I thought this would be the beginning of an action-packed mystery chase," said Fin

"Empty box didn't see that coming" Monty added

"Ohh well," Fin said while tossing the box back near the mailbox and continuing the walk to Cappa's. When everyone started walking ahead of me, I turned back and picked the box, stuffed it in my bag pack, and caught up with the rest of the group.

We reached Cappa's fifteen minutes earlier than we usually would, we had our drinks, talked about what old Everfall Main must have been like and we left for home.

That night, I got home, raced up the stairs to my room, and took out the box, I put it on my study table and looked at the symbols carefully there were about four symbols lined up across the box, for some reason, one symbol, in particular, looked vaguely familiar, I decided I would check the library the next day to look through some books.
