“Happy birthday Lily!” Belinda screamed right straight into my ear as soon as I entered into the classroom.
Yeah I nearly almost forgot that it was my birthday, nearly… till I was reminded by my brother which puts me on edge, Levi never remembers my birthday, none of my brothers do.
It only made me think about what in the world, they were planning this time
“So tell me any the plans for your birthday.” she gushed.
“None whatsoever.” I dumped my bag on the seat and sat.
Belinda came right in front of my face, “You can't be serious! this is your 18th birthday for goodness sake and you're telling me you don't have any plans, remind me how often one turns 18 again.”
“Once.” I provided.
“Exactly.” she snaps her fingers. “Which means you can't let today go to waste just like that.
I groaned there was no way I was getting out of this any time soon.
“How would you suggest I celebrate my birthday.”
“Easy go out, crash some parties, have some fun, do something you won't ordinarily do.”
“You know I don't have the guts for that, my brothers will kill me if they find out.” I sais
“They don't have to find out, what they don't know won’t kill them.” She said.
“I don't know” I said skeptically.
“Come on Lily don't be like that.” she pouted.
just then Zack my childhood's best friend interrupted saving me from further embarrassment at Belinda’s expense.
He cuffed her by the neck “What are you pestering poor Lily for so early in the morning, don't you have other things to do like… getting to class.” he said and turn to me flashing me a huge smile
And no I most definitely did not blush.
“Happy birthday Lily.” Zack said
“Thank you.” I said shyly talking an invisible strand of her behind my ears.
“You should be supporting me on this it’s her birthday and she wants nothing more than to spend all day moping around and regretting her existence.” Belinda said.
“I got you something for your birthday.” Zack said instead handing me a present.
“Oh you shouldn't have.” I said accepting it curiosity got the best of me and I opened it and gasped.
A new phone
Belinda squealed, “Oh my God, now that's what a boyfriend does, I'm so happy for you girl.”
“You shouldn't have.” I said to him and then to Belinda.
“He is not my boyfriend.”
“But he will be someday, if you’ll stop behaving like you're carrying the entire world on your shoulders and give love a chance.”
“I can't accept this, Zack this is too much.”
I thrust the package back into this hands but he pushed them back into mine.
“You have to, it's my fault the other one got broken anyway, I rather not have you scrunch up your savings trying to get a new one when I can just as easily afford one.” Zack said.
I grimaced apparently I was now a charity case, everyone at school knew I was struggling to make ends meet even though I had seven brothers capable of taking care of me but none was willing to do so.
Zack saw my grimace and quickly said.
“I didn't exactly mean it like that, it's just that you barely have enough and I just wanted to….”
He wasn’t very helping me at all.
“I should probably just shut up, shouldn't I.” he said
“Yes you probably should” Belinda nodded.
“You just accept it, Lily that way you wouldn't miss an important information about school and I can get to call you all the time I want, and tell you about sexy cool boys and when there is a frat party for us to get to gate crash.”
They’re right I really do need this phone and my savings are barely enough to pay my bills without me starving, much less to buy a phone and I really do need it for school, although I'm sure if Belinda had her way, the only information I'll be getting will be about the next raving party “Thank you Zach, I really appreciate it.” I said and I hugged him.
Zack blushed right to his hair roots and Belinda laughed asked her ass off at him.
“You really should think about having a party to celebrate your birthday.” he said when I released him.
“Nothing big really…. maybe I can take you out to lunch to celebrate or something.” he said hopefully.
“I'm sorry I really can't.” I said. “I have clean up to do and I need to prepare dinner for my brothers before they get back else I'll be in more Jeopardy before dawn.”
“Okay well maybe some other time.”
“Maybe.” I said even though I know well there wouldn't be some other time.
Now don't get me wrong Zach's a nice guy but I don't feel any attraction towards him even after being close with him for so many years, still yet I didn't feel anything at all, not like I felt towards….. him…. A total stranger who leaves gifts at my window sill almost every day…..a stranger whom I never met before in my life and probably never will.
I wonder if he’ll leave something for me tonight or if he knew today was my birthday…by tonight I would definitely have my answer.
And I did……. in the form of a phone call.
