Chapter 13: The Blast

740 Words
Wendy looked at Aaron doubtfully. She knew she was an only child; that's what her parents told her . But having a sharp resemblance to the woman in the photo made her feel it could well be her twin sister. She shrugged. "This woman is not me and neither is she my twin sister; I mean that's if I do have one." Looking at the woman brought cold shivers to her, and the more she stared at her the more she felt the urge to ask Aaron if he knew something about the woman. But just as she was about to ask him she felt a buzz inside her coat pocket. It was her phone vibrating. She brought it out and looked at the display. It was a message. 'Get out as fast as you can.' P Wendy froze after reading the message. Aaron saw her expression and walked up to her and looked down at her phone. He read the message and shouted alarmingly. "Holy s**t!" He grabbed Wendy and pulled her away from the sofa and dived to the floor with her, using his body to cover her. The three men seeing what Aaron had done also dived. But before they could reach for the floor, a strong blast shattered the window of the sitting room. A heap of smoke filled the room. Wendy shouted as she felt the lifeless body of Aaron on top of her. Looking through the smoke filled room she saw a pair of boots standing near her; They were a lady's boot. She tried to look up but was shot. She slowly closed her eyes and was carried out from under Aaron. The shooter took her and then fired shots at Aaron and the three men. Wendy was placed in the back seat of a car and driven away from Aaron's house. 'Extraction completed. What next?' The shooter had sent a message to tell the receiver they had completed their mission and was waiting for further instructions. 'Horace Hospital, 3rd Floor, room 39,ITC unit.' came the reply. Wendy's shooter drove off as fast as they could to the Horace Hospital and soon Wendy was taken to the third floor of the Hospital's Intensive care unit and placed in an isolated room. A medical team was called into the room and they immediately got to work on Wendy. Once Wendy regained consciousness they were asked to leave. Two people, an elderly woman and a younger woman were standing outside Wendy's room. The younger woman was Polly Maze, Wendy's half-sister, while the elder woman was Patricia Harvey, the woman that gave birth to both Polly and Wendy. "She deserves better, Mum" Polly said "Yes she does, Polly." her mother replied "Wendy doesn't need to go through all of this." Polly said looking at her mother with an air of disapproval. Her mother walked away from her. "Mum?" she hurriedly walked up to her mother and held her hand. Both women walked out of the hospital. "Don't ignore me mum." Her mother stopped, looked at her and then smiled. "I'm not ignoring you, my dear. Shall we go?" she asked. They got to the parking lot and spotted their car. Polly's mother threw Polly the keys. "Here, drive." she said. Polly quickly took the driver's seat and started the car and then drove off. They got to the house and once inside, they went into the sitting room where' Polly's mother dropped her hand bag and sat down. "Polly could you get me a glass of wine?" "Great, what is this a celebration or what?" Polly asked getting angry. "There will be time for that, I just need a glass of wine. Am I asking too much?" Polly looked at her mother unable to believe she could be happy, while Wendy was lying in a hospital bed. When she brought the wine and gave it to her mother, she sat down and looked straight into her mother's eyes. "It's time you tell Wendy what's going on around her." she told her mother. "With time she'll know." "And when will that be, when she's gunned down for something she doesn't know?" Polly's mother looked at her. "Polly, on whose side are you anyway?" Polly couldn't answer the question. She knew what her mother meant. She sighed and got up. "I'll get myself a glass of wine, okay?" she asked her mother. Her mother smiled "Then Join me." .
