Chapter 15: Polly meets Ortega

876 Words
Clarke had just dismissed Patricia by telling her the information regarding Williams Ortega's movement was confidential. Stunned by such a response from him, she decided to call Polly and tell her to wait for further instructions. She got on the phone and called Polly. "What is it mum?" Polly asked "Seems there might be a delay but hang around and I'll get back to you." Polly sighed on hearing her mother tell her to wait. "Great, and you said it was an emergency." "Polly, I said I'll get back to you, okay?" Polly sensed the agitation in her mother's voice and wondered what it was that got her agitated. "Fine, let me know." she said and hung up. She sighed and put the phone down on the seat and drove to a nearby cafe. I'll help myself with a glass of wine. she told herself. She parked the car far from the cafe and took a side street to enter it instead of directly crossing the street. When she got into the cafe , the place was quite busy. She quickly ordered her drink and went to sit in a corner of the bar waiting for instructions. She sat down and while she sipped her wine, she closed her eyes and thought of Wendy. She really wanted to see her. She had to let her know what was going on and why she was kept in isolation. But her thoughts were interrupted by someone bumping into her table almost making her drink to spill. She opened her eyes to see who it was. The stranger was a man who was about to pass but stopped suddenly. He turned and faced her. "Wendy Harvey!" He exclaimed much to Polly's surprise. He quickly sat down and held out his hands. Polly sat up and quickly looked around to see if he was alone. "No need to look around. I'm alone." he said. Polly started surprisingly at him. "I've been wanting to see you Wendy." he said. Polly was surprised at this unexpected visit such that she stared confusingly at him. "Ortega, Williams Ortega." The name sounded familiar to her but she couldn't remember where she had heard it. Then she remembered overhearing her mother on the phone mentioning the name. She had a feeling the emergency her mother was talking about was him. She smiled at him and stretched out her hands to greet him. "Sorry I was deep in thought, I sometimes forget the people I've met." "That means if you see Jenny you won't remember her, will you?" Polly had no idea who Jenny was. "Jenny-" "Yes, Jenny Ferretti." he said interrupting her. "Oh yes, I told you deep thinking, I don't remember my friends too well." "Well you better when I tell you what I want to tell you." he said looking around. Polly looked at the uneasiness in him. "And what might that be, seeing you look uneasy,Williams?" he looked at her a little worried and then bent forward. "I brought the list; my part of the list:" he said in a low voice. He took an object from his pocket and from under the table, placed it Polly's hands. "Find Jenny and get the other part of the list." he said pulling his hands aways. "Why are you doing this?" Polly asked. "To free myself." Polly raised her eyebrows. "Yes, I've held onto it long enough, thinking I could keep it safe. Now people are after it; the 120 names that make up the list." he said. That's should be 30 per list." she said "Sure, You, me, Jenny and Alonso." he said. "Alonso is dead." She said. "I know. But you should know where the other two lists are since he handed them over to you." he said. Polly stared at him in amazement. She knew she had been ordered to kill Alonso but she never knew this much was involved. "Don't tell me you can't remember even that?" he asked Polly while she stared at him in silence. Everything he was telling her was overwhelming. But she managed to put up a smile. "I do remember that," she replied. "Great. Now all you need to do is put them together." he said looking strangely at her, "Oh and by the way, do you still have the watch?" Polly stared blankly at him. She didn't know how to answer that question. "Listen maybe you're a little too forgetful now. But don't lose that watch." Polly smiled. "I won't." she managed to reply. "Cos if the pieces don't fit together, no list." he said pointing to the object he had placed in her hand. Polly had clutched the flat object and looked at it briefly. It was a shining metallic plane qaudrant that had a little pin which she knew had to fit into a tiny slot. "That means the complete list requires all four objects to fit together." "All at once, Wendy." he said getting up. "I'm out of here now. It's alll yours now." "Where to?" she asked him. Williams smiled and took her hands and shook her. "I hope to still keep in touch with you, Wendy." he replied. He walked out of the cafe leaving Polly staring at the object.
