SILENT CURRENTS

359 Words
The small lobster boat drifted two miles off the coast of Bressay Island, its diesel engine purring at a low, quiet idle. Julian stood at the aft rail, looking down into the clear, green-blue water of the channel. The tide was running north, a clean, powerful current moving out toward the open Atlantic. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out the matte-black USB drive containing the raw, decrypted Phantasm logs—the final physical record of the USS Leviathan, the Blackwood Head observatory, and the ancient spire resting in the abyssal trench. Clara stepped out of the wheelhouse, leaning her elbows on the wooden rail beside him. She handed him a fresh cup of hot black coffee from a metal thermos. "You're sure about this, Vance?" she asked quietly, her eyes fixed on the small drive in his hand. "That drive contains enough evidence to tear the Directorate apart. It could clear your name with defense intelligence. It could get you your career back." Julian looked at the small piece of plastic, then looked out at the vast, unbroken horizon of the ocean. "My career died sixteen years ago, Clara," Julian said softly. "And some secrets don't belong to any government. They belong to the deep." He didn't hesitate. Julian opened his hand, letting the drive slip from his fingers. The small black object fell through the bright morning air, hitting the surface with a tiny, silent splash. Julian watched as it sank through the clear water, turning over and over in the sunlight as the strong northern current grabbed it, dragging it down into the dark, cold depths of the North Sea channel—far beyond the reach of hydrophones, deep-sea divers, or human ambitions. Clara took a slow sip of her coffee, a soft, genuine smile touching her lips. "Fair winds, Vance." "Fair winds," Julian agreed. He turned back to the helm console, taking the wooden wheel in his hands, and engaged the boat's gear lever. The engine hummed to life, turning the vessel's wooden bow south toward open water, leaving Blackwood Head and the ghosts of the Leviathan far behind in the silent deep.
