The sea-green lobster boat pounded through the gray swells, putting three miles of dense sea fog between its stern and the chaotic recovery operations taking place around the mercenary warship. Julian sat on an overturned wooden crate in the wheelhouse, his shoulder throbbing with a dull, persistent ache as the adrenaline from the encounter began to fade. The terminal relay lay on the bench beside him, its low battery warning blinking softly in the gray morning light. Clara kept her eyes fixed on the compass housing, adjusting their heading to skirt the outer edge of the coastal shoals. "They'll realize what happened to that cable in twenty minutes," she said, her voice steady over the deep thrum of the diesel engine. "Once their technicians analyze the physical fracture on that umbilical, they’ll know it was hit with a targeted harmonic pulse from an adjacent source." "They won't be able to launch another deep dive for six hours," Julian said, checking his watch. "It takes hours to bleed the high-pressure lines on those atmospheric suits and rig a secondary power umbilical." "Six hours isn't enough time, Vance," Clara said, turning her head slightly to look at him. "The moment their surface commander realizes the signal came from a coastal craft, they’ll sweep every cove between here and the outer islands with heavy gunboats. We can't stay on the water." "We don't need to stay on the water," Julian said. He picked up his terminal relay, bringing up the last archived data frame he had pulled from the Leviathan’s black box before the bunker collapsed. "Look at the secondary header in the Phantasm stream." Clara glanced down at the small screen. Beneath the primary acoustic coordinates for the trench was a secondary sub-routine—a line of legacy code that Julian had written into the original algorithm back in 2004, but one he had completely forgotten until he decrypted Captain Harrison’s final flight log. SUB-ROUTINE: PHANTASM_ECHO_SHUTDOWN TRIGGER PARAMETER: DUAL-ARRAY HARMONIC NULL REQUIRED INPUT: TWO IDENTICAL 14.2 HZ SIGNALS, 180 DEGREES OUT OF PHASE. Clara’s brow furrowed. She leaned closer to the monitor. "A phase-cancellation loop?" "Active noise cancellation," Julian explained, his thumb tracing the code on the small screen. "It's the same principle used in high-end aviation headsets. If you take an acoustic wave and play an exact, inverted copy of that wave back at the source, the two sound waves collide and completely cancel each other out. The net amplitude becomes zero." "The spire in the trench is an acoustic emitter," Clara realized, her voice dropping as she caught the logic. "It requires a continuous acoustic standing wave to hold its internal relay open." "If we can generate an inverted fourteen point two Hertz wave and feed it back into the water column," Julian said, "we don't need to dive down to the wreck. We don't need explosives, and we don't need to cut the spire's physical hull. We can collapse its internal standing wave from the surface." "To invert a fourteen-Hertz wave at three hundred meters depth," Clara countered, her analytical mind immediately testing the engineering constraints, "you need an emitter with enough wattage to match the spire's output. This boat's electrical system couldn't generate a fraction of the power required to drive an acoustic transducer of that scale." "The boat can't," Julian agreed. "But the old maritime acoustic array at Blackwood Head can." Clara stared at him as if he had lost his mind. "The observatory is a crime scene, Vance! The main building was stripped by Arthur’s clean-up team, the power grid was blown when you popped the nitrogen vent, and there's a burning lighthouse three miles down the road! The place is crawling with local police and federal investigators by now." "The main building was stripped," Julian corrected, standing up and stepping to the helm window. "But the sub-sea hydrophone array—Delta-4—is still intact at the bottom of the cliff. Its high-gain underwater transducers are hard-wired directly to the station’s secondary backup generator in the lower sea cave." He turned to face her, his eyes cold and focused. "Arthur's team pulled the hard drives from the control desk, but they didn't touch the sub-basement infrastructure. They didn't know about the legacy emergency overrides I installed in the junction vault three years ago." Clara looked out at the thick wall of fog rolling past the windscreen. The risk was enormous; returning to the very site where the attack had begun felt like walking straight back into the lion's mouth. But as she looked at the terminal screen displaying the open, unencrypted Phantasm stream, she knew he was right. It was the only way to kill the signal permanently. "The tide is dropping," Clara said, her fingers tightening on the wooden spokes of the ship's wheel. "The sea cave beneath Blackwood Head has less than eight feet of clearance at low tide. If we enter that vault now, we’ll be trapped inside until the water turns." "Then we make sure the signal is dead before the tide comes back," Julian said. Clara slammed the throttle lever forward, adjusting their heading north, steering the green lobster boat back toward the high, dark cliffs of Blackwood Head.
