PROTOCOL OVERRIDE

575 Words
BANG! BANG! BANG! The heavy 9mm rounds chewed into the pressurized cooling oil jacket of the four-hundred-volt transformer. A blinding arc of electric-blue plasma erupted from the shattered casing, scorching the concrete ceiling and instantly short-circuiting the bunker’s main breaker array. "Kill him!" Arthur screamed, his calm demeanor vanishing into pure rage as he threw himself behind a concrete pillar. The two guards opened fire, their automatic rifles chewing up the server racks where Julian had been standing a second earlier. Sparks, flying circuit boards, and shattered glass rained down like shrapnel across the floor. Julian dived behind a thick steel server housing, pulling his improvised EMP device—the modified high-capacity boat capacitor he had carried in his dry-bag—from his jacket. He jammed the unit’s copper contact leads directly into the exposed, high-voltage bus bar running beneath the main network bus. "Let's see how much data your siphon can handle," Julian gritted out. He slammed his thumb onto the manual short-circuit toggle on his smartwatch. A violent, deafening c***k shook the room as the capacitor discharged its stored electrical energy directly into the live data trunk. The electrical feedback didn't just burn out the local servers—it traveled backward, using the shielded cold-war cable as a conductor, shooting five miles down the coast straight into the sea floor, slamming into the spire at the bottom of the North Sea Trench. Three hundred meters below the surface, the glowing black pillar overload-reacted. The ultra-low frequency pulse inverted. Instead of absorbing data from the sea, the spire unleashed a massive, high-yield acoustic shockwave back along the cable path. Inside Bunker 17, the floor began to heave. Deep, structural cracks ripped across the reinforced concrete walls. The high-voltage cables hanging from the ceiling snapped under the immense acoustic tension, whipping wildly through the air like burning blue serpents. The main terminal monitors flickered furiously, displaying a cascading wall of red system alerts: CRITICAL ACOUSTIC BACKFLOW. PHYSICAL CABLE INTEGRITY: 0% SIGNAL FEEDBACK INVERTING. COLLAPSE IMMINENT. "What did you do?!" Arthur yelled over the deafening roar of cracking concrete, staggering as the floor dropped three inches beneath his feet. "I closed the protocol," Julian shouted back through the dust and falling debris. The heavy concrete ceiling of the briefing room began to cave inward under the weight of the hill above. The server racks collapsed like dominos, crushed beneath falling granite blocks as the acoustic shockwave pulverized the subterranean foundations of the bunker. Julian turned and sprinted for the exit tunnel, driving his boots into the shifting, vibrating floorboards. Behind him, he saw Arthur Vance scrambling uselessly toward the burning main console, trying to save his precious terminal, right before a massive concrete structural beam collapsed into the glass pavilion, burying the control center under tons of rubble. Julian burst up the concrete stairs as the walls of the entry corridor began to implode. He lunged through the heavy iron blast doors just as the entire subterranean complex caved in on itself with a deep, earth-shattering thud. A massive cloud of gray concrete dust and pulverized dirt blew out of the tunnel mouth, throwing Julian forward onto the gravel driveway of the forestry station. He lay on his stomach in the cool morning mist, gasping for air, his body bruised and bleeding, as the ground beneath the satellite truck collapsed into a twenty-foot-wide crater. Bunker 17 was gone. The cable was severed. The signal was dead.
