Around him, the forest was alive with wet shadows.
The Blackwood woods were ancient, choking the jagged headlands in a tangle of gnarled roots and dark fern undergrowth. Every few seconds, the distant flare from the cliffside threw jagged shadows through the trunks, casting long, dancing fingers across his path.
Julian stopped behind a thick cedar trunk, his chest heaving silently. He wiped rain and sweat from his eyes, leaning his ear toward the rear trail.
Fifty yards behind him, the distinct metallic snap of brush under heavy boots echoed over the rain.
They're fast, Julian thought. They aren't tracking by sight. They're using thermal optics with motion-tracking filters tuned to human gait patterns.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his burner phone. He didn't turn on the screen. Instead, he reached down into the mud at his feet, grabbed a heavy granite rock, and used the phone’s tough casing to c***k off a fragment of a dry pine branch nearby. He wedged the burner phone into the fork of a young sapling ten feet to his left, angled toward the rear trail, and set its low-intensity screen to pulse continuously on a ten-second loop.
To a thermal optic sweeping through dense foliage, the heat radiating from the phone's battery—combined with the light pulse—would look like a resting human target taking cover.
Julian withdrew ten yards to the right, slipping silently into a deep drainage ditch lined with dead leaves and freezing mud. He pressed his back against the earth, pulling a layer of wet pine needles over his shoulders, holding his breath as he raised the eighteen-inch pipe wrench across his chest.
The crunch of boots drew closer.

The second operator stepped forward to cover him, his boot landing less than eighteen inches from Julian’s hidden position in the ditch.
Julian didn't wait for the lead man to realize the phone was a decoy.
He exploded out of the ditch like a spring, driving the heavy iron head of the pipe wrench straight up into the side of the second operator’s knee joint.
CRACK.
The operator let out a muffled scream as his leg buckled sideways, his carbine swinging wide and discharging a suppressed burst into the mud. Before the soldier could recover his balance, Julian drove his shoulder into the man's chest, throwing him to the ground, and slammed the steel heel of the wrench onto the side of the operator's helmet, knocking him cold.
The lead operator spun around, bringing his carbine to bear—but the half-second delay was all Julian needed.
Julian grabbed the fallen soldier's short-barreled carbine by its sling, yanked it hard toward himself, and kicked the lead operator square in the chest. The man stumbled backward against a tree trunk. Julian didn't try to shoot—the rifle's safety was still engaged, and he wasn't going to waste seconds figuring out a foreign selector switch. Instead, he swung the heavy buttstock of the weapon around like a bat, catching the lead operator full in the side of the helmet.
The composite material shattered with a loud c***k. The operator went limp, collapsing into the mud.
Julian stood over the two downed men, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The rain stung his face. Clara’s jammer was live.

Julian hit the iron door of the keeper's house shoulder-first, bursting into the dark interior.

Julian followed her up the narrow, spiral stone staircase that wound around the central core of the lighthouse tower. The concrete steps were slick with sea condensation, and the wind screamed through the open slit windows carved into the stone walls.
"How long have you been operating out of here?" Julian asked as they climbed.
"Since the Directorate put out a red-notice flag on my pension three years ago," Clara replied without looking back. "I knew the moment Delta-4 was brought back online, Arthur Vance would use your old code to probe the trench again. I've been tapping into your station's raw hydrophone feed from this tower for six months."
They emerged into the iron lantern room at the top of the tower.
The floor was covered with portable field gear: modular lithium battery banks, a military-grade satellite uplink array, and a heavy, custom-built acoustic jammer pointing its parabolic dish out toward the sea. Twin ruggedized monitors glowed in the center of the room, displaying a real-time waterfall spectrograph of the North Sea Trench.
Julian walked over to the monitors, his eyes instantly locked onto the data stream.
The primary waveform was identical to the one he had intercepted at the observatory—three long tones, two short, pause. "What thing?" Julian asked.

The image was a side-scan acoustic map of the seabed at two hundred and eighty meters depth. Lying broken along the abyssal cliff face was the skeletal black shape of a Virginia-class nuclear submarine—the USS Leviathan.
But what dominated the image was what had grown out of the submarine's hull.
Rising out of the torn forward missile deck was a massive, perfectly geometric pillar of dark, non-reflective material. It was over eighty feet tall, embedded deep into the bedrock of the trench like a spike driven into the earth's crust. It had no seams, no welds, and no visible power source, yet the water surrounding it was shimmering on the thermal scanner with intense, localized heat.
"When the Leviathan's hull breached," Clara whispered, "Captain Harrison realized what we had hit. It wasn't an enemy submarine or a lost wreck. Julian’s eyes widened as the final piece of the logic puzzle slotted into place. "Harrison locked the beacon using my code... so nobody could control the relay without the author's key."

A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the bottom of the lighthouse tower.
Down on the ground floor, the heavy iron door Julian had entered through gave a violent shudder under a focused breaching explosive.

Besides, someone has to stay at this terminal to keep the jammer's directional dish locked on that drone, or they'll paint your boat with a thermobaric missile five seconds after you clear the rocks."
"Clara—"
"You wrote the protocol, Julian!" she yelled over the sudden roar of a second explosion blowing through the lower doors below. "Now go complete the sequence before Arthur Vance turns the entire ocean into his private war room!"
She shoved him back toward the shaft entrance, unholstered her MP5, and racked the bolt with a sharp, metallic clack.
Julian looked at her for one final, agonizing second. Then he turned, ducked into the dark vertical ventilation shaft, and began his descent into the subterranean sea caves below.
