The grand ballroom of the Crestwood Hotel shimmered beneath crystal chandeliers, their light dancing across polished marble floors and elegant gowns. Guests mingled beneath towering floral arrangements while the soft melody of a string quartet floated through the air. It was a night meant for generosity and celebration—but Clara Montgomery could already feel the tension building.
Standing near the edge of the room in her emerald gown, Clara scanned the crowd. Her heart sank when she spotted Ethan Carter across the ballroom. Confident and composed in a navy suit, he laughed easily with guests, drawing attention without trying. Their families had been rivals for years, each determined to outshine the other in both business and charity.
“Try to ignore him,” Mia whispered beside her.
Clara sighed. “If only it were that easy.”
Later, when Clara stepped onto the podium, the room slowly quieted.
“Good evening, everyone,” she began. “Tonight isn’t just about prestige or recognition. It’s about opportunity.
