Chapter Title: Sparks at the Gala
The applause from Ethan’s announcement slowly faded, but the mood in the ballroom had shifted. What had started as a night of charity now felt like a subtle contest. Guests whispered among themselves, comparing the bold pledges made by the Montgomerys and the Carters.
Mia leaned closer to Clara, lowering her voice. “Well… that was dramatic.”
Clara let out a quiet breath. “Dramatic is one word for it. Strategic is another.”
Across the room, Ethan excused himself from a group of guests and walked toward her with an easy smile.
“Impressive speech back there,” he said casually.
Clara raised an eyebrow. “Trying to be polite now?”
“I’m always polite,” Ethan replied with a small grin. “But I couldn’t help noticing the scholarship program announcement.”
“And I couldn’t help noticing your perfectly timed hospital pledge,” Clara shot back.
Ethan chuckled softly. “Competition keeps things interesting.”
“Charity isn’t supposed to be a competition,” Clara said.
“Maybe not,” he admitted, “but our families seem to think otherwise.”
Before Clara could respond, her father joined them, his expression calm but firm.
“Ethan,” he said, “tell your parents the Montgomery family wishes the Carters success with their hospital project.”
Ethan nodded politely. “And please let your father know we admire the scholarship expansion.”
Mia whispered to Clara, “Why does this feel like a polite war?”
Clara watched Ethan walk away, his confidence unmistakable.
“Because it is,” she murmured.
And somehow, she had a feeling this rivalry was only just getting started.
