Chapter Four: A Power Unveiled

1082 Words
The quiet of the evening was deceptive. Windale's serene atmosphere masked the undercurrents of tension brewing within Kian’s pack. Selene could feel the unease as she walked through the village, Lyle clutching her hand tightly. Though she had no intention of causing discord, her presence here was clearly unwelcome to some. It started subtly—a sideways glance here, a hushed whisper there. Selene had learned to ignore such things. But tonight, the whispers carried a sharper edge, and she couldn’t ignore the weight of them any longer. “Stay in the cabin,” Selene instructed Lyle softly, tucking him into bed. “But, Mama—” “Stay,” she repeated gently, brushing his hair back. As she stepped out of the cabin, the night air felt heavier than before. She didn’t have to look far to see the brewing storm. Near the village center, a small crowd had gathered. At the heart of it stood Kian, his towering frame radiating authority, and another man—a wiry figure with sharp eyes and an even sharper tongue. “Why, Kian?” the man snarled, his voice laced with bitterness. “Why would you bring her here? A stranger? From another pack? You’ve compromised us all!” “She needed help, Callen,” Kian replied evenly, though his tone carried an edge of warning. “She’s not our responsibility!” Callen spat. “We’ve faced enough threats without adding hers to the mix. You’ve put us in danger for what? A woman and her child?” Selene’s stomach twisted at the accusation. She took a step closer, her heart pounding. “She’s under my protection,” Kian said, his voice firm. “That should be enough for you.” “Your protection?” Callen sneered. “You’re thinking with your heart instead of your head. A leader should—” Before Callen could finish, Kian’s growl cut through the air. The sound sent a ripple of unease through the crowd. “Careful, Callen,” Kian warned. “You’re treading dangerous ground.” But Callen didn’t back down. His posture shifted, his muscles tensing as his eyes glowed faintly. “You’re not fit to lead if you can’t see the danger you’ve brought to our doorstep.” In a flash, Callen lunged at Kian. The transformation was instantaneous—clothes shredded, bones cracked, and fur erupted as both men shifted into their wolf forms. Kian’s sleek, powerful black wolf faced off against Callen’s wiry gray one, their snarls echoing through the village. Some other omegas decided to join Callen in the fight against their leader as Snow, the Beta was not around. Selene watched in horror as the two wolves circled each other, their growls a dangerous symphony. Kian struck first, his massive paw swiping at Callen, who darted to the side with agility. Callen retaliated with a lunge, his jaws snapping inches from Kian’s throat. The two clashed, a blur of fur and fangs, their fight a brutal display of raw power and skill. Selene’s instincts screamed at her to intervene, but she knew better than to step between two wolves. Still, she couldn’t stand by and do nothing. “Kian, stop this!” she shouted, her voice cutting through the noise. Kian’s ears flicked in her direction, but he didn’t falter. Callen took advantage of the momentary distraction, pouncing on Kian and pinning him to the ground. The sight sent a surge of panic through Selene. Without thinking, she stepped forward. “Enough!” she cried. Callen’s glowing eyes turned to her, his lips curling into a snarl. He stepped away from Kian, his attention now fully on Selene. “You shouldn’t be here,” Callen growled, his voice distorted but clear through his wolf form. Selene held her ground, her heart hammering in her chest. “This fight solves nothing,” she said. “Kian is your leader. Show some loyalty!” Callen’s growl deepened, and he took a step toward her. Kian struggled to rise, his body bruised and bleeding. “Selene, get back!” Kian shouted. But Selene didn’t move. Her gaze locked with Callen’s, and for a moment, everything else faded away. She saw the anger in his eyes, the bitterness that drove him. Callen lunged at her. Time seemed to slow as Callen’s massive form closed the distance between them. Selene’s heart raced, fear and determination battling for control. She raised her hands instinctively, bracing for the impact. And then it happened. A surge of energy erupted from within her, unlike anything she’d ever felt. The air around her seemed to ripple, and in an instant, Callen froze mid-air. His body hung suspended, his jaws inches from her, his glowing eyes wide with shock. The crowd gasped, their murmurs a mix of awe and fear. Even Kian stared, his wolf form still as he processed what had just happened. Selene stood trembling, her hands still raised. She looked at Callen, then at her own hands. “What… what is this?” she whispered. The energy pulsed again, and Callen was thrown backward, landing in a heap several feet away. He shifted back into his human form, his expression a mixture of rage and disbelief. Selene fell to her knees, her body weak from the exertion. Kian shifted back as well, rushing to her side. “What just happened?” he asked, his voice low but urgent. “I don’t know,” Selene admitted, her voice trembling. “I’ve never… I didn’t know I could do that.” Kian helped her to her feet, his gaze filled with both concern and curiosity. “We need to talk,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. The crowd dispersed reluctantly, their whispers lingering in the air. Callen was taken away by a few pack members, his injuries tended to but his pride undeniably wounded. Kian led Selene back to the cabin, where Lyle slept soundly despite the chaos outside. He poured her a glass of water, watching her closely as she drank. “That wasn’t just wolf power,” Kian said finally. “That was something else.” Selene nodded, her hands trembling as she set the glass down. “I don’t know what it was. I’ve never felt anything like it before.” Kian leaned forward, his gaze intense. “Whatever it is, it’s powerful. And it’s dangerous. You need to learn to control it.” “I don’t know how”, she said.
