Chapter 20 “Get back inside!” Maggie’s feet carried her toward the nearest house. A man in his nightclothes stood on the stoop. He held a bright lantern in front of his face, which threw his expression of sheer terror into sharp relief. “Miss Trent!” Bertrand shouted after her. She didn’t stop, couldn’t even look away as shadows slipped under the protection of the man’s light, wrapping around the backs of his ankles. Maggie knew all too well the cold agony that pained the man as he dropped his lantern and fell to his knees. The light shattered, leaving him in darkness. He was consumed before she reached the foot of his front steps. “Maggie,” Diven shouted from right behind her. The newly coated shade tipped his face up, staring at Maggie as though blaming her for the horrible pain.
