Lila's POV
Damien stepped into the center of the Alpha Hall, and the whole room went quiet. It felt like the air had weight in it and everyone had inhaled at once and forgotten to let it back out.
Victor stood across him, hands loose at his sides, entirely too relaxed for a man about to fight for a territory. "Annul the marriage," he said. "Or face me formally. Those are the only terms I'm offering."
I watched the room lean toward Damien, waiting for him to hesitate. He'd buried his father days ago. House Blackwood was still bleeding from Lucien's attack. Anyone with sense would have taken the annulment and lived to fight another season.
"I don't negotiate over my wife."
A few people actually laughed and disbelieving the whole scenario before catching themselves. I was
becoming anxious and couldn't help but keep watching his hands and fingers,as they were slightly trembling against his sides. I doubt anyone else caught it. I knew he wasn't afraid of Victor my so-called father but what this could cost, and he was choosing to risk it anyway.
I caught his sleeve before he reached the circle painted into the stone floor. "You don't have to do this."
"Yes, I do." He replied. His voice barely above a whisper.
"Because of the contract?". I blurted out.
He went still and for a second I thought he wasn't going to answer at all.
"No."
One Word . But it had a great impact under my ribs and stayed there, because for the first time since any of this began, I understood he wasn't protecting me out of obligation. He was choosing me, in front of every Alpha who'd ever doubted either of us, with nothing written down to make him do it.
Across the hall, I felt Kieran stare burning my skin, watching before I even turned to look. His jaw was tight enough that a muscle jumped along it, his arms crossed hard over his chest like he was holding something in by force. Elena stood close beside him, and I watched her track exactly where his eyes kept landing.
"You still want her," she said, not a question but a statement of fact.
He didn't answer her , of course he didn't need to.
Her lips curved into a sly smile. "Then you're going to hate what happens next."
Victor attacked first, fast, low, aiming to put Damien on the ground before the crowd had finished settling. Damien took the hit across the shoulder and barely moved, and a crack rippled through the hall causing a collective intake of breath, chairs creaking as people leaned forward.
Victor's confidence began wavering . I saw it cross his face for half a second, the particular stillness of a man recalculating an opponent he'd underestimated.
Then Damien's aura rolled outward through the room, and I felt it hit me before I understood what it was, a pressure against my sternum, low and strange, almost like recognition. Several of the younger wolves near the front dropped their heads without seeming to decide to.
My pulse was odd in response, a beat that skipped and then landed twice as hard, and I pressed my left hand flat against my chest , trying to feel what was happening to me.
Victor drew blood on the next exchange, a shallow line across Damien's forearm that dropped on the stone floor in dark quick drops. My whole body moved before I decided anything, one step forward and my hand already reaching for nothing. I knew it was a fight I had no way to enter.
Damien's eyes found mine across the circle.
Everything in his face changed for that half second. Not the Alpha or the man who just told a room full of enemies he didn't negotiate. Just Damien, the same man who'd kissed me on that terrace like the world might end, who'd held me on a cracked marble floor while I cried into his father's collar.
Victor didn't wait for him to look away on his own. The strike caught Damien across the ribs, hard enough that I heard the air leave him from across the room.
"Damien!"
My voice tore out of me before I could stop it, sounding raw and louder than I meant it to be. His head snapped toward me on instinct.
Something answered the sound. A thin thread of silver light luminated from my fingertips and I stared down at my own hand like it belonged to someone else.
Near the back of the hall, an old man's face went pale. "Impossible," he said. His voice barely more than breath.
Damien got back up.
This time there was no rage in him at all. I watched the shift happen and whatever had cracked loose in the chapel that night stay contained now, folded down into a colder Aura. Every move he made after that cost Victor his legacy. One final motion sent my father to his knees on the stone he'd built his whole reputation standing over.
The hall went silent, His allies still anticipating.
Victor looked up, bracing for the humiliation.
"I didn't come here to take your pack," Damien said, and then he looked past Victor, straight at me. "I came because you insulted my wife."
The hall erupted into side mumurings, some stared in disbelief, others in fear. I could feel the air around me becoming lighter and there was a feeling in my chest that had been braced my entire life against exactly this kind of room finally, quietly, let go.
Victor was still kneeling, his head bleeding but still found enough breath to try one last blade. "You'd risk an entire pack," he said, looking past Damien, straight at me, "for a woman whose blood you don't even understand?"
I felt my chest crack open ,like a door giving way after being pushed too many times. My heartbeat changed in a second, beating louder in my head and the chandeliers overhead began to shiver faintly enough that I thought at first I'd imagined it.
"Lila?" Damien's voice reached me from somewhere that felt farther away than it should have.
I couldn't answer him. My vision blurred at the edges, and when it cleared, silver was bleeding through my own eyes, visible even to me, a strange, cool light where blue used to be.
"Moonlight," someone whispered, and the word moved through the hall faster than I could track it.
One Alpha stepped back. Then another. Then, one by one, wolves who had spent their whole lives never bowing to anyone began lowering themselves to the floor like their bodies simply obeying something older than any of them.
Damien remained standing. Confusion and worry filling his grey eyes. He was just staring at me like he'd never actually seen me before.
Near the back, the same old man who'd gone pale earlier lowered himself slowly until his forehead touched the stone. "The Moonlight line has returned."
My eyes found Damien's across the ruin of the hall.
Then a voice moved across the hall that hadn't come from my mouth at all.
"Find the crown."
