Kieran's POV
"You are my mate, Lila."
It came out of me as a growl before I realised saying it.The words were still hanging there when Damien stepped in behind her.
He didn’t say anything at first. Just stood there the way he always did when he was deciding how far he was willing to push things. Lila was right in the middle of us, and for the first time in five years I actually looked at her.
She didn't answer.
She was now different. The plain uncertain girl I remembered was gone. Sharper cheekbones, clearer eyes, that still way of holding herself that somehow made her hard to look away from.
Striking in a way she never used to be. I rejected that face once. Standing here now, I couldn’t remember what the hell I had been thinking.
My eyes dropped before I could stop them. The dress looked magnificent on her hips that had filled out into this soft curve, a fuller chest the fabric didn’t quite hide. Her cleavage was ......damn.
Everything about her was just…perfect. The girl who left this place in pieces had come back looking like someone who had grown into the best version of herself, and the bond twisted hard in my gut over it.
She didn't look at me, like she was deciding whether I was even worth a full sentence.
The regret hit me so clean it almost hurt. I once stood in front of the whole pack and called the bond a mistake.
Damien’s voice cut in, low and even.
“That’s enough, Kieran.”
I didn’t look away from her. “She felt it. Don’t act like she didn’t.”
His hand settled at her waist, fingers trailing that soft curve of her hip like he was making a point. She was already claimed. My wolf shoved hard against my skin and gold bled into my vision. I wanted to knock his hand off and put mine there instead.
To see if the bond would answer the same way it had the second she stepped out of that SUV.
Lila’s eyes moved between us. She didn’t step closer to either one. Just stood there with her chin level, with the same calm she’d worn through the courtyard intoxicated me even more.
Damien’s eyes stayed locked on mine. “She’s my wife. My Luna. Whatever you’re feeling is five years too late.”
“I rejected her,” I said. The words came out rough. “I know what I did. I also know what the bond is doing right now. You can smell it same as I can.”
He did. That was the part that actually made my stomach turn. He did have every right, and i imagined how many times he bent her over.
I told myself I didn't care, and standing here now, watching her lean half an inch into his hand without seeming to decide to, I understood exactly how much of that had been a lie.
"You should go," Damien said. It sounded worse than a threat. A simple statement of fact, delivered the way a man only delivers something he's already fully prepared to enforce.
"She's my mate." I said it again, because some stubborn, wounded part of me needed him to hear it a second time and watch it land somewhere on his face.
“Walk away Kieran” Damien said fiercely. “Before this turns into something the packs will be talking about for years.”
I held his stare a second longer, then my eyes dropped back to Lila one last time.
“This isn’t finished,” I said.
Damien’s answer was cold and final. “It was finished the day you rejected her.”
I hated that he was right almost as much as I hated him, and I'd spent the better part of tonight discovering exactly how much room I had left in me for that particular feeling.
He was my cousin. My family. I'd grown up two houses down from him, learned to fight in the same yard, and somehow the universe had decided the one woman my wolf would ever recognize as mine belonged to him first.
Lila hadn't said a single word since he arrived. I made myself look at her one more time. If that Elena of a b***h didn't seduce me, it would have been different by now.
Lila would have been my Luna. It would have been me making her moan my name.
Something in my chest that had gone numb five years ago woke up fully and ached like a fresh wound.
"This isn't over," I said, mostly to myself, and forced my legs to carry me away before either of them could watch exactly how much that cost me.
Behind me, I heard him say something low to her, too quiet to catch. I hated that I would spend the rest of the night replaying every second of the last five minutes.
Wondering how different tonight would have looked if I had been even half the man five years ago that I was pretending to be right now.
My phone rang. I almost smashed it but I decided to pick it anyways."Kieran here, speak if you dare".
A lazy voice spoke on the other end ."You want her don't you?..let's work together"....
