Lamen shifts into his wolf and charges at Sky. He’s about thirty paces away when something forces him to stop. It’s the necklace. Sky plants her feet, shoulder-width apart.
Her eyes close. A channel opens between her and the sky above us. I halt, backing out of my own shift, stuck watching what’s unfolding.
A sharp, high sound slams into my ears. It’s so intense I think my ears might bleed. I clench my jaw and hold on as the noise rises and drills deeper.
Lamen throws his head back and howls. His body shrinks in on itself. He stumbles backward while Sky moves toward him, steady and calm, the pendant blazing with light.
He tries to snarl. He can’t. The power from the pendant crushes him. He collapses at her feet, fully submitting. Sky stands over him. He shifts back into human
