Thread Of Fate

Ethan sat at his desk, staring at the map on his laptop. He had marked all the locations where his visions had come true. Claire Donovan’s rescue wasn’t the first; it was just the most intense. Small incidents—like foreseeing a car crash or a spilled coffee cup—had felt trivial until now. But this was different. Someone’s life was on the line, and he was the only one who could stop it. The phone buzzed on the table, startling him. It was Claire. She had insisted on exchanging numbers after he saved her, claiming she owed him her life. “Hello?” Ethan said, trying to keep his voice steady. “It’s happening again, isn’t it?” Claire’s voice was shaky. “I saw the news. Another woman is missing.” Ethan paused. How much could he tell her without sounding insane? “I have… a lead,” he finally said. “I want to help,” she replied firmly. “Claire, it’s dangerous. You barely got out alive last time.” “I’m not sitting on the sidelines. You saved me, Ethan. I owe you.” Ethan sighed. He didn’t have time to argue. “Meet me at the diner on Fifth in an hour.” --- At the diner, Claire slid into the booth across from Ethan. Her eyes were filled with determination, though her hands trembled as she gripped her coffee mug. “What’s your plan?” she asked. Ethan hesitated. Could he really involve her in this? But before he could answer, another vision hit him. He was standing on a rooftop, looking down at a dark alley. A woman was screaming, her voice echoing in the night. A figure emerged from the shadows, dragging her toward a door with a red-painted number: 17. The vision ended as abruptly as it began, leaving Ethan gasping for air. “Ethan? Are you okay?” Claire asked, her voice full of concern. “It’s… it’s happening tonight,” he whispered. “I saw the location. I need to get there before it’s too late.” --- By nightfall, Ethan and Claire were standing in front of an abandoned building on the outskirts of the city. The number 17 was painted in peeling red on the rusted door. “Are you sure about this?” Claire asked, her voice trembling. “No,” Ethan admitted. “But I don’t have a choice.” They pushed the door open, the creak echoing through the empty halls. The air was thick with dampness and decay. Ethan led the way, his heart pounding. Every step felt heavier, the weight of his visions pressing down on him. He could feel they were running out of time. A faint sound reached their ears—a muffled cry. Ethan’s adrenaline surged as he followed the sound, leading them to a locked door. “Help me with this,” he whispered to Claire. Together, they managed to force the door open. Inside, a young woman was tied to a chair, her face streaked with tears. “It’s okay,” Ethan said softly, rushing to untie her. “You’re safe now.” But as he worked on the ropes, a shadow appeared in the doorway. “Well, well,” a voice drawled. “You’ve been busy, haven’t you?” Ethan turned to see a man in a dark coat, his face partially obscured by a mask. The glint of a knife in his hand sent a chill down Ethan’s spine. “Run!” Ethan shouted to Claire and the woman. Claire hesitated for a second before grabbing the woman and pulling her toward the exit. Ethan lunged at the masked man, trying to buy them time. The fight was chaotic, the small room filled with the sound of scuffling and grunts. Ethan managed to knock the knife from the man’s hand, but he was quickly overpowered. “You think you can change the future?” the masked man sneered, pinning Ethan to the ground. “You have no idea what’s coming.” Suddenly, Claire appeared in the doorway, holding a broken piece of wood. Without hesitation, she swung it at the man’s head, knocking him unconscious. “Come on!” she yelled, helping Ethan to his feet. --- Cliffhanger Ending: They stumbled out of the building, gasping for air. The woman they rescued was safe, but Ethan couldn’t shake the man’s words. As they stood under the flickering streetlights, Ethan’s phone buzzed. It was an unknown number. He hesitated before answering. “Hello?” A distorted voice crackled through the line. “You can’t stop it, Ethan. This is bigger than you.” The line went dead, leaving Ethan staring at the phone in horror. “What is it?” Claire asked, her voice shaking. Ethan looked at her, the weight of the mystery pressing down on him
