Rin’s Point of View
Rin pushed the button to roll down the window. She let the breeze in. The sun was setting. She continued eating Pocky sticks while handing one to Haru after every while. She also continued playing music.
If she played one song she liked, she asked Haru which song he liked so that she could play. Then Rin remembered that they had bought gummy bears. She reached for the bag and searched for it. After she found it, she opened it and threw one in her mouth. She handed Haru one but he refused.
Rin asked, “You said you like the things I picked?” and did an eye roll. She was not sure if he saw the eye roll.
However, Haru laughed. This confirmed that he had seen her eye roll at him.
Rin also laughed hearing him laugh. It had been around only fifteen minutes since Haru started driving. Rin kind of got the clue that they might be heading out of the city.
She felt an urge to smoke so she put the packet of gummy bears back in the bag. She then asked, “Can we stop for a minute to smoke?”
Haru looked at her and replied, “Of course. Let me find a nice place to stop.” He then drove for around two minutes until he found a place.
They got out of the car. Rin watched as Haru walk around the car again to where she was. After he reached, they leaned on the car as they took out two cigarettes and lighted them. They smoked in silence.
Rin checked the time. It was 6: 50 pm.
Then Rin asked, “How long until we reach the place?”
She heard him speak, “Well, if I tell you that. It would be ruining the surprise.”
As soon as she heard it, she stuck out her tongue at him. Haru started laughing at this gesture. Then, Rin also joined in the laughter.
They laughed together for a while. She then heard Haru speak, “Rin, it is 7 pm. We should get going.”
Rin nodded and they got back into the car. Rin watched as Haru reach for the bag and take out two cans of soda. He handed one to Rin.
Rin thanked him and opened the can to drink. Haru did the same. After that, Haru started the car and started driving. As soon as he did that, Rin kept her can in the bottle holder near her seat and she looked out of the window.
A song was being played but she leaned on the window and watched outside. She felt the song in the background become farther as she became lost in the moment. She watched the trees in the distance. Her thoughts felt distorted but it was not the bad kind of distorted.
Since she was lost in the moment, she did not know how much time had passed by. The car came to a stop. Right after that, she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around.
Her eyes met with Haru’s eyes. He broke the eye contact and the silence by saying, “We are here.” Rin nodded and looked outside.
They were on the foot of a tiny hill. There was a beautifully decorated gate and steps that probably led to the top of the hill. Rin got out of the car. She walked towards the gate. It was enveloped with fairy lights of the colors blue and white. Rin was lost for words. She touched the fairy lights and smiled.
It was pretty. She had not seen anything like this in a long time.
She turned around and looked at Haru. She smiled at him and said, “This is so pretty Haru.”
Haru smiled back and said, “It is 7: 15 pm. Do you want to smoke a cigarette?”
Rin nodded. Haru took out two cigarettes and handed one to her. She took it and lighted it. She then handed the lighter to Haru. She looked at the gate and smoked. She still could not get over how pretty it looked. Additionally, it was dark so it was prettier.
After about five minutes had passed, Haru spoke, “Rin it is time we go up the steps.”
Rin nodded. She watched as Haru opened the car door and took out the bags which contained the snacks and sodas. He then closed the door.
Rin followed as Haru walked up the steps. They reached in about five minutes. On the top of the tiny hill, there was a canopy. The roof and the pillars of the canopy were also decorated with fairy lights.
Rin followed Haru to sit on the bench inside the Canopy. Right after they sat down, Rin noticed that she could see the whole city from there. There were lots of lights as far as she could see. It was almost as if someone had picked the stars and laid them on the ground. As Rin was mesmerized watching the view, she felt a tap on her shoulder. Haru was handing her a can of soda.
She thanked him. Then she opened the can to drink it. She watched Haru open a packet of potato chips. They started eating and drinking. Rin was searching for the packet of gummy bears that she put back in the bag. Just then she felt another tap. She looked to find Haru pointed towards the city.
Rin was confused as to why he was pointing towards the city. As soon as she looked up, she saw a light shoot up into the sky. A smile made its way onto her face as she realized what it was. The light then divided into several vibrant colors. The sound and the view, it was fireworks.
Rin watched fascinated. Everything was pretty. At that moment, she was extremely glad to be there. Things felt right and understood that the world can be beautiful. Even though it was only temporary. She continued watching. With every firework that was shot up in the sky, she waited for the next one. After ten minutes, it finally stopped. Rin was a little disappointed that it was over this soon.
She looked down at her shoes and then at Haru.
Haru was already looking at her. He spoke, “I kind of had the feeling that you would be looking like this. Like you have lost your purpose in your life. Right now they are taking a ten minutes break and will continue for ten minutes again until it is 8 pm.”
As soon as she heard that, she nodded at Haru. She felt better. In that ten minutes, they ate the chips and drank their sodas. Rin also ate her gummy bears. When the ten minute break was over, Rin asked, “Can you give me one cigarette?”
Haru answered, “Sure”. He passed one to her and took out one for himself.
As she lighted her cigarette, the fireworks started again. Rin was once again mesmerized by the sight. Rin still remembered to inhale the smoke from her cigarette even though her eyes were fixed on the fireworks.
The ten minutes passed by fast and by the time Rin knew it, the show was finished. There were no more fireworks being shot into the sky. Rin continued watching the sky for a little while more. After she was ready, she turned around to face Haru.
She spoke, “It was beautiful. Thank you so much for inviting me to come here. I will never forget this” and smiled at him.
Haru spoke, “Do not worry about that. I am glad you liked it.”
They then proceeded to smoke one last time before they left the place. After they were done, they picked up the trash they had made from the snacks they had and put it in the trash can nearby. Then they walked down the steps together.
They reached the bottom of the hill and walked towards where they parked his car. Rin was walking towards the car’s front seat when Haru suddenly ran and opened the car door for her. Rin laughed but politely thanked him.
She watched as Haru nodded and walk around the car to the driver’s seat. He opened his side of the door and got in. Rin watched as he put his car key in and start the car. They were silent as he started driving back towards the city.
