Aki's Point of View
As he drove and was about to turn at a corner, there was a long line of cars in traffic.
“Great, guess I will have to take the long way now” thought to himself as he let out a long sigh.
He signaled his right indicator and quickly swerved and chose to take the long way rather than having to wait in a traffic which may not move for hours.
Right as he exited the intersecting road and drove down the longer road, he felt a sharp pain in his brain as another memory flashed before him.
This time it was the same girl who had grown to be a little over 6 years. She ran as any other toddler would and fell. Aki raised his hand the moment she fell as he knew she would have scraped her knees due to her running speed.
To his surprise, the little girl did not cry and she turned and sat upright. She looked at her wound with blood on both of her knees and her face almost broke into tears. Aki felt like this memory was not a memory and was instead, happening in reality.
Aki immediately raised his hands to reach out the little girl’s knees when he tried to speak, he heard himself in a muffled voice which was followed by a little clearer voice saying, “As long as…here, you will never…pain…dear”.
The little girl’s knees were perfectly fine as soon as he heard that voice and she did not even have a scratch. “That’s weird. She definitely scraped her knees” thought Aki.
“Whose voice was that?” thought Aki in confusion. While in his thoughts, he caught sight of something in his shadow moving from the corner of his eyes. As he looked at his shadow to confirm what that movement was, he saw that his shadow had two large cream-white wings.
Aki was shocked to see something so huge for it had no feeling of something weighing him down on his back. Aki quickly turned his head to see what it was but there was nothing in sight.
The memory ended in a flash and his focus was now back to driving. He finally reached his apartment and parked the car shabbily in the parking area.
He left all his belongings in the car other than his phone and the keys to his apartment as he got out of his car. He made sure to lock the car and jogged slowly. He took the elevator up to his floor and as he waited in the elevator, he thought about that mysterious memory.
It stood out from the rest so much that he mostly forgot to think about anything else, let alone the flashes of memories that he has been seeing. The last memory disturbed him a little as well because it was out of the ordinary.
“Just what am I seeing? Am I hallucinating? No, it felt too real for just a hallucination or my imagination. There has to be a reason to all of this” thought Aki as the elevator door closed.
Aki sighed and re-opened the elevator doors and stepped out. His steps seemed to be confused at this point. He reached his apartment and unlocked the door.
He hung the keys on a hanger behind the main door as he took off his shoes.
He went straight to the kitchen and picked up a glass from the dish-drying rack. As he poured himself water from the water-filter, he tried to logically find an explanation for all of his flashing memories of ‘someone’.
He gulped down the water and set the glass down on the kitchen table. He walked to his bedroom and fell straight down on the bed face-down. The sound of the pedestrians and vehicles at a distance was the loudest noise he could hear.
Aki turned to face the ceiling and thought what a weird day it was for him.
He tried to gather his thoughts. First, he recollected the scene of the woman walking out of the hospital and I really did see her in the morning. Then he saw the same woman in a puddle of blood, as if she was dead or dying.
Then he remembered the flashes of scenes, or rather, short clips of videos being played in his head except, it felt as if he was a character in that video rather than as an audience.
It was peculiar how he kept seeing the same woman, just in her different ages. There was no proper sequence to the memories he saw. It was all at random.
Then Aki sat upright and rubbed his chin as if he was thinking profusely. “All of the memories that I saw were related to that woman I saw earlier at the hospital today” he thought.
“But before I saw these memories, I don’t even know her, let alone talk to her. And yet somehow all these flashes of memories of the woman seem to have an impact on me. Was there some sort of reason for the memories to just shimmer into my head?” thought Aki.
He could not find a definitive answer and so, he decided to search through Google instead. He thought it might have been some sort of a condition which he did not have the knowledge of.
He typed and typed for minutes which soon turned to hours. He had finished two cups of coffee by then. After another hour of trying to research, read articles about mental health conditions and symptoms, there was not even a single thing he could find that was helpful to him.
“This is getting nowhere. I cannot really confirm any of these. I think I might have to visit a professional at this rather than just waste my time finding something that I do not even have the experience in” surmised Aki as he closed his phone.
Aki put his phone on charge, went to the cupboard and took out fresh clothes to wear and threw them on the bed. He took his bath towel and bathrobe and went to the bathroom to take a shower.
He undressed and put the clothes that he wore that day into the washing machine and began to shower. He tried not to think too much about what had happened today.
The only thing relaxing and peaceful today was the shower he was taking. After about a good soak in the shower, he turned off the tap. Dried his hair with the hair dryer and applied a cream to his face and went back to his bedroom.
He changed into the clothes that was on his bed and went to the kitchen, turned off the lights and walked to the living room. He pulled the curtains and made sure that the main door was locked tight.
He was feeling tired by then and decided to take a nap so he strode to his bedroom, got inside the blanket, turned off the lights and then took a nap.
