As the lecture went on, Haru was still thinking about Rin. He could not focus on the lecture and he could not wait to talk to her until it was over. So he tore a paper out of his note and started writing on it so that he could pass it to her.
He wrote, “Hey, what is the next class you have?” and slowly slid the paper to her side of the table. As soon as he did that, Rin looked up from writing the notes and looked at him. He gestured at the paper with his eyes. Rin looked at it and took the paper. She wrote something on it and passed it back to him.
Haru read it in his mind, “Psychology. What about you?”
“Sociology :) ”, he wrote back.
For the next ten minutes or so, they wrote to each other about their schedule and the time their classes got over. After which, Haru mustered his courage to ask her if she wants to eat lunch with him and passed it to her.
She replied with a “sure” and a smiley emoticon.
Haru felt accomplished as he was establishing a steady-paced relationship with her, not too progressive which could scare her away nor too late to save her. It was the path he had hoped for.
The strange force he felt while he was entering the class was the one that made this path happen. However, he did not know anything about it and had no clue how to research it. For now, he had no choice but to trust this strange force because even though it was unknown, it felt positive and familiar.
The remaining time of the class went by pretty fast and the lecturer left the class. As Haru stood up, he faced Rin and smiled.
He asked, “So, let’s meet by the Library for lunch in two hours?”
Rin replied, “Sure. See you then”
She smiled and turned to leave for her next class.
Haru was leaving for his class as well while thinking of what he was going to talk about to Rin during lunch. Since he was so occupied with those thoughts, he did not notice that Rin was not going towards her class but was heading in the direction of the gate.
Rin’s Point of View
Rin hurriedly walked towards the gate because she was both astonished and excited about what had happened. She needed to think about this. She did not want this to happen because of the prior planned major event of her life. She did not want to have any attachments. Nonetheless, she could not help but think about how right and how happy she had felt. Even though the conversation she and Haru had shared was through passing notes, her heart was beating fast and she had felt a gush of happiness in her chest. The heavy and the lonely feeling she has carried for a long while had disappeared in an instant when Haru talked to her.
She shook her head and mentally scolded herself for feeling this. She had been thinking about her end for a long time and she did not want to make a change to it. However, for the first time in a while, she could not help but feel that it would be pleasant and meaningful to live.
She walked towards her car. She did not care about skipping her class. She just wanted to have a smoke.
She thought to herself, "Should I meet Haru for lunch? What am I thinking? I already agreed to meet him. It would be rude not to."
“However, I am not sure why do I feel this intense connection with him. I just saw him today.”
This was a question she had no answer for. Rin thought that maybe if she spent some more time with him, she would figure out the reason why.
“Well, another reason as to why I should meet him for lunch.” With this, she decided to meet him for lunch in two hours.
As for now, she drove towards the isolated place where she saw Haru in the morning. She reached the place in five minutes and took out a cigarette. She smoked and kept thinking about Haru and the agreement to meet for lunch.
“Wait, this is not a date right?” she thought to herself. She became nervous at the thought of this.
“How long has it been since someone asked me to meet for a lunch?”
"Calm down, it is just lunch and it is probably a friendly gesture. Who would ask me on a date and that too during college hours? Yes, it is absurd. This is not a date."
Deep down, Rin wanted this to be a date but she would not accept that she desired it.
She finished smoking and got into her car. However, since she skipped this class, she stayed in the car and tried to calm her nerves. It had been an extremely long duration since she had talked to anyone or ate with anyone in college. She took an anxiety pill from her bag and ate it. It helped her calm down after few minutes. She started writing an assignment that she had originally planned to write during lunch.
By the time she finished writing it, there were about ten minutes left for her third class. She hurriedly packed up and started driving towards college. She parked her car and then she walked to her third class, barely making it on time.
She found an empty seat and sat down. This time, she focused on the lecture and made notes. One hour flew by pretty fast and even though Rin felt nervous, the anxiety pill helped her stay calm. After the class was over, she walked slowly towards the Library because she did not want Haru to think that she was desperate. Rin reached near the Library in about five minutes.
She saw Haru waiting for her. The moment he saw her coming, Rin saw his eyes glowing and a gorgeous smile which melted her heart.
Meanwhile, Rin did not know that Haru had run to the Library the moment his class was over.
