Haru's Point of View
“Should I say that what she is feeling will pass and that everything will be alright? How might this make her feel? Will it make her feel better or will it offend her?” He thought.
He did not want to mess up one tiny bit. Maybe he needed a reminder that it was not possible. Trying to do everything perfectly could have more implications than advantages.
“Or should I tell her that what she is feeling right now is wrong and only in the spur of moment. And that she should not dwell on that feeling.” He thought.
Then he realized. He thought, “What am I? An i***t? That would be like telling her that what she is feeling is invalid. I can’t do that.”
“Come on. Think. Think. What would be the right thing to tell her at the moment? What are the things that she would want to hear right now? What can I say to make her feel valid and also let her avoid doing anything that could hurt her or make her regret?” Haru thought.
So lost in these thoughts and contemplating what to do, Haru was late in hearing the sobs coming from the woman near him. When he did, he slowly turned his head towards her and looked at her.
What he saw in that moment, broke his heart into thousands of pieces. Hell, even millions. He wanted to punch himself for not noticing earlier and at the same time also wanted to protect Rin to the point that nothing can ever hurt her or make her cry like this.
Rin had her head on her knees and her arms were covering her head. And she was sobbing. As she continued sobbing, he could not stand it anymore. He had to do something. And his stupid brain could not come up with anything to say.
Without being able to think when the person he loved was so much in pain, he did something that he never would have thought to do with a calm and rational mind.
He shifted closer to her and then put his arm around her. With his other hand, he gently caressed her head. As he did that, Rin started sobbing harder. He held her tightly, wishing that all of her pain was transferred to him. No matter how much tougher he acted around other people, at this moment he knew that she would be his weakness. But also his strength.
He kept caressing her head as he spoke, “I know it does not feel like it, but everything will be fine. It will get better and I promise you that. I just want you to know that no matter what you choose to do or you feel like doing, I will support you. You over anyone else. I know it will be hard but for now, you can let it out. I will be here with you. For as long as you need.”
After he was done speaking, Rin’s sobs became much harder. It was stabbing Haru right through his chest. But he realized that she might have been keeping it to herself for so long and that she needed to let it out. She did tell him that she had not told anyone about it. So he decided to stay strong for her. He held her. And he was ready to be beside her for no matter how much time she needed.
Few minutes had passed by and Rin’s sobs were slowing down. Haru patiently waited as her sobs came to a stop. When it did, he slowly took his arms back and spoke, “Do you need anything? Water?”
Haru could barely hear her when she spoke, “Can you get me some tissues from my car?”
Her head was still on her knees with her arms covering it so he could not see her face. Haru replied, “Of course. Wait a little. I will be back soon.”
She did not say anything so he stood up and then walked towards her car. It was unlocked so he opened the door and got the box of tissues. As he was turning back to close the door and leave, he saw a bottle of juice. He grabbed it and then closed the door.
He walked towards the area where Rin was. She was no longer resting on her knees. She was looking at something near her or maybe she was just lost in her own world.
He reached where she was and then sat near her. He handed her the box of tissues. She took it and whispered a “Thank you”.
He replied, “Don’t worry about it. And here drink the juice if you are thirsty. I grabbed it from your car” as he handed her the juice.
As she took the juice, Haru asked. “Do you feel a little better?”
She looked at him and smiled while she nodded.
Haru let out a sigh. Now that Rin seemed a little better or at the least she was not crying, he was not panicking anymore. So naturally his thoughts became messy and he did not know what he was supposed to say or do now.
He was in the middle of forcing himself to think of something when he heard Rin call his name.
“Haru?”
He looked towards her and replied, “Yes?”
She spoke, “When I was crying that time, you said that everything will be fine right?”
Haru nodded.
She continued, “I was thinking what if it is not fine? What if it does not get better? Then what am I supposed to do? I would be living with the hope that it will get better but if my hopes get crushed, what do I do next?”
Haru did not need much time to think. He knew what he had to and wanted to say.
“If it does not get better or if everything is not fine, then I will make it better for you. I promise. No matter what I have to do, I will do it if that will make things easier for you.”
As soon as he said that, he wondered if he made it so explicit that he loves her. He was starting to worry about it. In the midst of those thoughts, he heard Rin speak.
“Haru. Thank you for being here with me. You make me feel calm. I would have never imagined someone would say something like that for me. Even if you don’t do it, just the fact that you are saying it made me feel better.”
Haru wanted to say that he will do everything he can but realized that Rin was not finished, so he kept quiet.
Rin continued, “And when I said that I feel like running away from home, it probably stressed you out a lot. I am sorry for that. I did not mean it in a way that I would harm myself. I meant it in a way that I am not ready to back to that house until I know what I should do. I am just so confused at the moment and it is overwhelming. I just wanted a break and think it out carefully. This decision will affect me and my father. And I do not want to make a bad decision that I will regret later.”
Rin let out a sigh as soon as she was done.
Haru was shocked. He never thought that she might have needed a break. All he thought of was how to tell her that she should not be making a bad decision when all she wanted to do was make a good one.
He cursed himself. He wanted to punch himself. First he misunderstood what Rin was trying to do. Then he was too caught up in trying to think what he should do, he noticed her sobbing late. All he could do at the moment was think of the mistakes he had made and regret it.
As he was thinking, he heard Rin say.
“I have still not made a decision. And I do not want to go back home without the right decision. What should I do?”
As soon as he heard Rin say that, Haru got into thinking. “What should I tell her? What would be the right thing? Until she makes a decision. Where should she go? She made running away from home sound like it is not a bad idea. But it still is a big question of where she could stay.”
Just then he had an idea.
He spoke, “Can you wait a minute? I need to make a call right now.”
Rin nodded.
Haru stood up and then walked towards his car. He took out his cellphone from his pocket and then dialed his mother.
On about the fifth ring, his mother picked up the call.
“Yes honey?” his mother said from the other end of the call.
“Um mom, I need to ask you to do something for me.” Haru said.
His mother replied, “What is it?”
He spoke, “You know Rin right?”
His mother replied, “Yes of course.”
Haru took a deep breath and spoke, “So she is at some kind of a problem at the moment and she can’t go home because one of the problem is there. So I was wondering if she can stay with us until she gets a little better.”
There was a pause.
Then his mother spoke, “Wasn’t she just discharged today from the hospital?”
Haru replied, “Yes mom.”
His mother immediately responded, “Bring her home. She can stay with us for however long she wants to. I will make something to eat. And don’t worry about your father, I will explain everything to him. Okay?”
Haru replied, “Okay mom. Thank you.”
Then he hung up.
He walked back to where Rin was and sat down beside her.
He started speaking, “I am sorry if I went out of the line but I just called my mom to ask if it was okay if you stayed with us for a while. If you don’t mind, will you come with me? You can stay with for a while.”
Rin looked surprised. And she did not say anything for a while. Haru did not disturb her.
He thought, “Maybe I really went out of the line?”
Then she asked, “Is it really okay? I don’t have cousins or friends. And I don’t really want to stay at hotel by myself.”
Haru smiled at her and said, “Yes Rin. It is absolutely fine. You don’t need to worry about anything else okay?”
She nodded.
