Chapter 5: Test Retake

1058 Words
LOGAN Wednesday. I finally had a day off of work. It felt weird sleeping past 4:30am. I was actually able to curl my hair and wear something decent. With the weather getting a little cooler I decided on skinny jeans and my wildcats sweatshirt from high school. “Ready to go?” I ask, with Cades sweatshirt in hand. “We still have awhile” Kristen says putting her mascara on. “I wanna stop by ‘Rise and Grind’ for a coffee” I tell her. “Oooh good point. Let’s go!” She says finishing up. We walk into the coffee shop and it’s packed at usual for this time of the morning. I maneuver around the crowd of the people. “Can I make a few coffees?” I ask. “Yes but do it quickly” Sam says as he hustles through the back. I make myself an caramel iced coffee and make a vanilla latte for Kristen. “Thanks Sam! See you tomorrow!” I yell before heading out the door. We walk into the lecture hall early and make out way to our normal spots. I glance down front and see Cade setting up the PowerPoint. I suck in a deep breath and descend the steps that lead straight to him. He doesn’t even glance up but instead holds up a finger. I roll my eyes and toss his sweatshirt at him before turning away. He jerks up to his full height. “Hey!” He calls out. I stop and turn around forcing a smile on my face. “I see you’ve made the switch to iced coffee” he says smirking. “I figure it’s safer should I come in contact with any doors” I say sarcastically. He chuckles silently before adding, “Dr. Mathew’s said you can make up the test. He’s got office hours from 4-6 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays” Cade says crossing his arms. I heave a sigh, “I can’t do those hours. I have to work..” I tell him. He shrugs, “Tough s**t. Take it or leave it”. I narrow my eyes at him. “Are you f*****g kidding me? You are the reason I’m in this predicament in the first place” I say jabbing him in the chest with my finger. He lets out a dramatic laugh, “oh, see! I knew you’d blame me for this”. “Because you’re the one who hit me with the door!” I say, my tone getting angrier. “Everything okay?” Dr. Mathew’s says placing his bag on the desk. “Yes, sir” Cade says. “No, actually everything is not okay. I’m not trying to be difficult, but I cannot take my test during your office hours. I have to work during those times..” I say, now standing beside Cade. Our arms are both crossed. “I see” Dr. Mathew’s says combing his fingers through his beard. “When is the next day you have off?” He asks. “Well, today actually.” I say moving my hair out of my face. “Very well. Mr. Adams can proctor your exam in my office this afternoon.” He says. Cades mouth falls open. “But..” he starts. “You said you’d grade the exams for me today. Did you not?” Dr. Mathew’s says. “Yes, sir..but..” Cades starts to say. “It’s settled. Now if you two don’t mind..I’ve got a class to teach” he motions for me to take my seat. I shoot Cade a smug glance before walking up to my stuff. CADE My eyes burn into the back of her head as she makes her way back up to her seat. It absolutely irks me that once again she got her way. Granted it was my fault that she missed the test in the first place, but still. My gaze stays fixed on her. She looks up at me for a brief moment before shaking her head and looking down. I am dreading this afternoon. My classes finish at 4:30 and I make my way back to Dr. Mathew’s office. I secretly hope that Logan had completely forgetting to come by. We didn’t even set up a time. It could happen. But, of course I’m not that lucky. Logan sits with her legs crossed outside of the office. “You do realize it’s 4:45, right?” She says, her voice sounding irritated. I unlock the door and push it open. “Thanks captain obvious. Any other deductions?” I say motioning for her to go in. She scowls at me, “I’ve been waiting for almost an hour” she says. “So sorry, princess. I have classes too you know..” I say closing to door before walking over to the file cabinet. “Let’s just get this over with” she says sitting across the desk. “Finally something I can agree with you on” I say handing her one of the tests. I sit behind the desk and begin to grade the exams from Monday. Dr. Mathews teaches three calculus III classes so there’s quite a few to get through. Every few minutes my eyes are drawn up to Logan. I’d never noticed how thick and long her eyelashes were. In all honesty I’d never taken the time to actually look her in the eyes. My eyes were drawn to the way the light hits her blonde hair exposing soft brown undertones. I can smell a hint of toasted coconut, it’s the same scent that now covers the sweatshirt she returned to me. I wipe the thoughts from my head and keep my eyes down, continuing to grade the exams. It’s only been 35 minutes when Logan stands up. “I’m done” she says handing me her exam. I furrow my brow. There’s no way she could have gotten a decent grade finishing this quickly. I scoff and take her test. I look up at her. She’s standing there with her arms crossed and her head c****d to one side. I shake my head before glancing down to grade. I bite the inside of my cheek as I move through each question. I feel her presence hovering over me.
