Marco’s birthdayOn that Saturday morning in late November, Marco was turning forty-five.
He and Anna had made love early, then fallen back asleep. When Anna opened her eyes again, it was nine o’clock. She got out of bed, opened the shutters and let in the lovely morning light.
In the kitchen, she made some strong coffee and prepared toast with butter and organic fig jam, Marco’s favorite. She went back into the bedroom and kissed his lips.
- Happy birthday, darling! - she whispered, and he slowly opened his eyes, not yet fully awake.
- Good morning! - he replied sleepily.
- Come on, breakfast is ready. I’ll wait for you in the kitchen.
After breakfast Marco took a long, hot shower and at eleven, as planned, Matilde and the girls stopped by to wish him happy birthday. Alessia and Ales
