Aleppo, July 2014The first bomb went off about two hundred meters from the building that housed the hospital, where the volunteers of the International Humanitarian Organization were working.
Alessandra, trembling with terror, left the small surgery room on the second floor and ran down the stairs toward the ground floor, where the emergency room and most of the patients were.
Suddenly, a second bomb hit the wall of the building, gutting the stairwell and throwing Alessandra over the railing. Her head hit the iron banister and she fell to the floor below, landing on her back. Shards of glass from the shattered window rained on her.
When she came to, the first thing she felt was a deafening ringing in her ears and, immediately after, the patients’ desperate cries of pain and fear.
