Chapter 14 :

A Shift in the Air It was a calm Saturday afternoon, and the Siddiqui-Khan household seemed unusually quiet—unsettlingly so. No loud laughter echoed from the kitchen, no game of charades was being played, and no one was yelling at anyone else about pancakes. The only sound was the soft hum of the ceiling fan, and the occasional rustling of the curtains as a breeze swept through the open window. Safa sat at the kitchen table, sipping her tea, her mind racing. The past few days had been filled with laughter, chaos, and unexpected bonding. And yet, despite the fleeting moments of connection, something hung in the air between her and Humain. It wasn’t just the teasing banter or the playful jabs—it was something deeper, something she hadn’t expected. There was a shift, a subtle but undeniable change. ___________________________________ A Visit from the Past “Hey, are you okay?” Sameera’s voice broke through her thoughts, and Safa looked up to see her friend standing at the entrance of the kitchen, an eyebrow raised in concern. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just thinking,” Safa replied, though she couldn’t keep the unease from creeping into her tone. “About him?” Sameera asked, tilting her head toward the living room, where Humain was talking to Saad. Safa swallowed, setting her cup down with a soft clink. “Maybe.” “Ah,” Sameera said, taking a seat beside her. “You’re starting to realize that even the coldest people have a way of creeping under your skin, aren’t you?” “I don’t know what it is,” Safa admitted, pushing her cup away. “It’s like… one minute, we’re arguing like old enemies, and the next, it’s like I can’t stop thinking about him. It’s confusing.” Sameera let out a small laugh. “That’s the curse of being around Humain Haroon Siddiqui. He’s like a riddle wrapped in a mystery wrapped in a designer suit. It’s hard to get him, but once you do, you’re never quite the same.” Safa gave her a sidelong glance. “You make it sound like you have a personal experience with this.” “I don’t personally know,” Sameera teased, “but I’ve seen enough of his… charm, for lack of a better word, to know that once someone lets their guard down around him, it’s all over.” Safa sighed. “I don’t want to let my guard down, though.” “Well, you might not get the choice,” Sameera said, her tone softening. “Humain is a hard person to ignore. He has this way of forcing you to pay attention, whether you want to or not.” ___________________________________ The Awkward Encounter As if on cue, Humain entered the kitchen, his usual composed demeanor slightly less so. He looked over at Safa and Sameera before speaking. “Are we having a secret conversation in here?” he asked, his voice teasing but with a hint of something else—something less playful. “Or can I join?” Sameera grinned. “Feel free to join, Humain. We were just discussing how great it is that we’re all friends now.” “Friends?” Safa repeated with a raised eyebrow. “Is that what we’re calling this chaos?” Humain smiled, a glimmer of amusement in his eyes. “Chaos makes things interesting.” Safa couldn’t help but chuckle. “I suppose that’s true. But don’t think I’ve forgotten about your role in all of this.” Humain stepped closer, his eyes darkening just slightly. “And what role is that?” “The one where you manage to stay calm while the rest of us are losing our minds,” Safa replied. “That’s your superpower, isn’t it?” He leaned against the counter, crossing his arms. “Maybe I just don’t waste my energy on unnecessary things.” Safa shook her head, fighting a smile. “You make it sound like you’re above everything.” “I am,” Humain said with a wink. “At least, I like to think I am.” Sameera rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide her grin. “You’re insufferable, you know that." ___________________________________ An Unexpected Request As the three of them shared a moment of teasing, Saad walked in, his face unusually serious. “Safa, can we talk for a minute?” Safa looked up, a little startled by his tone. “Sure, what’s up?” Saad motioned for her to follow him into the living room, and Safa did so without question. He closed the door behind them, his expression more guarded than usual. “Is everything okay?” Safa asked, concerned. Saad ran a hand through his hair, a sign of his unease. “I’ve been thinking about something, and I need your advice.” “Anything,” Safa said, sitting down on the couch next to him. “What’s going on?” He hesitated for a moment, then spoke quietly. “It’s about Zayn.” Safa raised an eyebrow. “Zayn? What about him?” “I’m worried about him,” Saad admitted. “He’s been so distant lately. He’s been keeping to himself more than usual, and he’s not opening up about what’s bothering him. I think it’s more than just the usual stuff.” Safa frowned, her heart tightening. “I haven’t noticed anything… different. He’s been with the group, right?” “I know, but…” Saad paused. “I think he’s hiding something, and I don’t know how to get through to him. He’s been shutting everyone out.” Safa’s thoughts shifted as she processed Saad’s words. Zayn was always a bit of a mystery, but if something was going on beneath the surface, it was something she needed to address. “I’ll talk to him,” she said, her voice firm. “Maybe I can get him to open up.” Saad gave her a grateful smile. “Thanks. I knew I could count on you.” ___________________________________ A Quiet Moment with Zayn Later that afternoon, Safa found herself standing outside Zayn’s door. She took a deep breath and knocked lightly. “Zayn?” she called softly. “Can we talk?” A moment later, the door opened, and Zayn stood there, looking as guarded as ever. “What’s up?” he asked, his tone neutral. “I need to talk to you about something,” Safa said, her voice gentle. “Can I come in?” Zayn hesitated, but then stepped aside, allowing her to enter. She took a seat on the couch, and he sat across from her, his posture tense. “What’s going on with you, Zayn?” she asked, looking him in the eye. “You’ve been distant lately. I know something’s bothering you. You can’t just keep it bottled up.” Zayn ran a hand through his hair, his eyes darting away. “It’s nothing. I’m fine.” Safa didn’t buy it. “You’re not fine, Zayn. You’re avoiding everyone, and it’s not like you. If you need help, you need to talk to someone.” Zayn exhaled sharply, his walls momentarily coming down. “It’s just… it’s all too much. Between the family drama, the constant tension with Humain, and everything else, it feels like I’m drowning. I don’t know how to handle it anymore.” Safa’s heart softened. “I understand,” she said quietly. “But you don’t have to go through this alone. We’re all in this together, and we can help you through it.” Zayn looked at her, the vulnerability in his eyes taking her by surprise. “I don’t know what to do anymore, Safa.” Safa smiled gently. “You don’t have to have it all figured out right now. But you don’t have to face it alone, okay?” Zayn nodded slowly, his shoulders relaxing for the first time in what felt like forever. “Thanks, Safa. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” ___________________________________ The Beginning of Something New Later that evening, as Safa rejoined the rest of the group in the living room, she felt a strange sense of relief. It wasn’t just about helping Zayn—it was about finding her place among the chaos, the laughter, and the unpredictable moments. Humain caught her eye from across the room, and for a fleeting second, their gazes held. He gave her a small, almost imperceptible nod. It wasn’t much, but it was enough. For the first time in a while, Safa felt like things were starting to fall into place, not perfectly, but with purpose. And maybe, just maybe, the chaos wasn’t so bad after all. --- End of the chapter ---🌼
