Chapter 15 :

1302 Words
A Twist in the Tale The Siddiqui-Khan household was buzzing with energy. The family had decided to take a day trip to the countryside for a much-needed break. After weeks of chaos, misunderstandings, and a growing tangle of emotions, the idea of fresh air and open spaces seemed like the perfect remedy. Safa stood in the driveway, supervising the loading of the vehicles. “Do we really need *three* picnic baskets?” she asked, eyeing the mountain of food Saad was attempting to fit into the trunk. “Of course, we do,” Sameera replied, throwing her hands in the air. “Have you met this family? We eat like it’s an Olympic sport.” Humain strolled up, his ever-composed demeanor intact. “If we’re late because of all this overpacking, I’m blaming you, Sameera.” Sameera glared at him. “Blame me all you want, but don’t come crying to me when you’re hungry later.” “Enough bickering,” Safa interjected. “Let’s just get moving before we lose daylight.” ___________________________________ The Journey The two cars were packed to capacity, with Saad driving the first car and Hussain taking the wheel of the second. Safa ended up in the passenger seat of Saad’s car, while Sameera, Zayn, and Juveriya squished into the back. “Why do I always get stuck in the middle?” Zayn grumbled, wedged uncomfortably between the two women. “Because you’re the youngest,” Sameera teased, poking his cheek. “And the most annoying.” “Will you two stop fighting?” Juveriya sighed. “I’m trying to enjoy the view.” Meanwhile, in the second car, Humain sat in the back with his laptop balanced on his knees. Salman, ever the serious one, occupied the front seat with Hussain. “Do you ever take a break?” Hussain asked, glancing at Humain through the rearview mirror. “Work doesn’t stop just because we’re on a trip,” Humain replied, not looking up from his screen. “You need to learn to relax,” Salman said, his tone mildly disapproving. “Not everything is about work.” Humain didn’t respond, but his lips twitched in what might have been a smile. ___________________________________ Arrival and Exploration The group arrived at a sprawling countryside estate just as the sun began to rise higher in the sky. The lush green fields stretched endlessly, dotted with wildflowers and framed by distant hills. “Wow,” Safa breathed, stepping out of the car. “This is beautiful.” “See?” Saad said, throwing an arm around her shoulders. “I told you this was a good idea.” “It’s perfect,” Juveriya agreed, pulling out her camera. “I can’t wait to take some pictures.” The group unloaded the cars and set up a picnic spot under a large tree. The blanket was spread out, the baskets unpacked, and the games began. Zayn and Hussain immediately started a game of cricket, while Juveriya roped Sameera and Salman into an impromptu photo session. “Humain, come play with us,” Saad called, waving a cricket bat. Humain raised an eyebrow. “Do I look like someone who plays cricket?” “You look like someone who needs to have fun,” Saad retorted. “Come on.” With a resigned sigh, Humain joined the game, much to everyone’s amusement. Despite his protests, he turned out to be surprisingly good at batting, hitting the ball with a precision that had even Zayn cheering. “See?” Safa teased. “You’re not completely hopeless.” Humain smirked, brushing imaginary dust off his shirt. “I aim to impress.” ___________________________________ Lunch and Laughter The cricket game ended when Zayn accidentally sent the ball flying into the nearby stream. The group reconvened at the picnic spot, digging into the feast Sameera had so meticulously prepared. “This biryani is amazing,” Salman said, helping himself to a second serving. “Of course, it is,” Sameera replied, preening. “I made it.” “Don’t get too full of yourself,” Hussain teased. “You still burned the naan.” “Hey!” Sameera protested, throwing a piece of bread at him. “That was your fault!” The banter continued, the group falling into an easy rhythm of teasing and laughter. Even Humain seemed to relax, leaning back against the tree and watching the scene unfold with a faint smile. As the meal wound down, Juveriya pulled out her camera again. “Group photo time!” she announced. The group groaned but eventually complied, gathering together in front of the tree. Juveriya set up the timer and dashed back to join them, just in time for the shutter to click. “That’s going to be a keeper,” she said, checking the photo. “We actually look like we like each other.” “Miracles do happen,” Safa quipped, earning a laugh from the group. ___________________________________ An Unexpected Discovery After lunch, the group decided to explore the estate. They wandered through the fields, marveling at the beauty of the landscape. It wasn’t long before they stumbled upon an old, abandoned barn. “Creepy,” Zayn declared, peeking inside. “Let’s go in.” “Why do you always want to explore creepy places?” Sameera asked, eyeing the barn warily. “Because it’s fun,” Zayn replied, already stepping inside. The group followed, albeit reluctantly. The barn was dusty and filled with old tools and hay bales, but it had a certain charm. “This place is like something out of a movie,” Juveriya said, snapping photos. “Or a horror story,” Salman muttered. “Don’t be such a buzzkill,” Zayn said, climbing up onto one of the hay bales. “This is awesome.” As the group explored, Safa noticed Humain lingering near the entrance, his expression thoughtful. “What’s on your mind?” she asked, walking over to him. “Nothing,” he replied, but there was a softness in his tone that made her pause. “You’re a terrible liar,” she said with a smile. “Come on, spill.” He glanced at her, his gaze lingering for a moment before he spoke. “It’s just… being here, away from everything, it makes you think. About what really matters.” Safa’s smile softened. “And what really matters to you, Humain?” He didn’t answer right away, his eyes fixed on the horizon. “Family,” he said finally. “And making sure they’re happy.” Safa’s heart gave a little tug. Despite his aloof exterior, there was so much more to Humain than met the eye. “Well,” she said, her voice gentle, “I think you’re doing a pretty good job of that.” ___________________________________ A Lighthearted Finale As the sun began to set, the group returned to the picnic spot, where Sameera and Saad had started a game of charades. “Okay, this one’s easy,” Saad said, gesturing wildly. “Uh, is it a bird?” Juveriya guessed. “A plane? Superman?” “No!” Saad exclaimed, flapping his arms. “It’s a chicken! How is that not obvious?” The group burst into laughter, with Zayn nearly falling over from laughing too hard. “Your acting skills are legendary,” Humain said dryly, earning another round of laughter. As the day came to an end, the group packed up and headed home, their spirits lifted. It had been a day filled with fun, laughter, and a renewed sense of connection. And as Safa watched Humain drive the car ahead of hers, she couldn’t help but feel that something had shifted again—this time, in the best possible way. ___________________________________ ---End of the chapter ---🌼
