Chapter 19 :

Beneath the Masks The Siddiqui-Khan mansion had barely begun to settle from the lavish masquerade ball when life threw another curveball at its residents. The revelation of Azeem’s betrayal still hung in the air, like an unspoken truth lingering at the edges of every conversation. Despite the temporary victory of reclaiming the stolen funds, Humain and Salman knew this was just the beginning of a more complex web of challenges. ___________________________________ Morning Reflections The morning after the ball, the house was eerily quiet. Safa, still in her pajamas, sipped her coffee while flipping through a book at the breakfast table. Zayn stumbled in, looking disheveled, with a plate of leftover samosas in hand. “Morning, sleepyhead,” Safa teased. “Don’t talk so loudly,” Zayn groaned. “I think I danced too hard last night.” “You danced like a chicken on roller skates,” Hussain said as he entered, looking far too energetic for someone who had also stayed up late. “Excuse me, I was bringing style to the floor!” Zayn retorted, striking a mock dance pose that sent Safa into peals of laughter. “You brought something, alright. Embarrassment,” Hussain shot back. Before their banter could escalate, Salman walked in, looking grim. “Where’s Humain?” he asked. “In his study, as usual,” Safa replied. “Why?” “Work,” Salman said vaguely, his tone indicating it wasn’t a subject for public discussion. Safa’s curiosity piqued, but she decided not to press further. However, her concern for Humain grew. Something about him had seemed different lately—more guarded, more distant. ___________________________________ The Study Confrontation Humain sat at his desk, staring at the list Faraz had sent over. The embezzlement case had taken a sharp turn. While Azeem had admitted to his part in the crime, further digging had revealed he wasn’t acting alone. There was a bigger fish in the pond, and Humain was determined to catch them. Salman entered the study, shutting the door behind him. “Still on this?” he asked. “Of course,” Humain replied. “This goes deeper than Azeem. Someone else is pulling the strings.” “And you think you’ll find them by staring at that list?” Salman asked, raising an eyebrow. Humain smirked. “I’ve already found them.” Salman’s eyes widened. “What? Who is it?” Humain leaned back in his chair. “Not so fast. I need to confirm a few things first. But if I’m right, this person has been working against us for months.” Salman nodded, his expression serious. “Let me know what you need. We’ll take them down together.” Humain’s gaze softened slightly. “Thanks, Salman.” ___________________________________ An Unlikely Alliance While Humain and Salman worked in secret, Safa and Sameera decided it was time for a family intervention. They had noticed the increasing tension between the brothers and the toll it was taking on everyone. “We need a distraction,” Sameera declared as she and Safa sat in the living room. “Something to lighten the mood.” “Like what?” Safa asked. “A prank,” Sameera said, her eyes twinkling mischievously. “On the guys.” Safa hesitated. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? They’ve been under a lot of stress lately.” “All the more reason,” Sameera insisted. “Trust me, this will be hilarious.” Safa finally agreed, albeit reluctantly. Sameera recruited Zayn and Juveriya, and together they devised a plan. ___________________________________ The Great Prank Later that evening, the family gathered for dinner. Sameera, Zayn, and Juveriya kept exchanging conspiratorial glances, which did not go unnoticed by Salman and Humain. “What are you three plotting?” Salman asked, narrowing his eyes. “Nothing!” Sameera said innocently, which only made her look guiltier. Halfway through the meal, a loud crash came from the kitchen. Safa gasped. “What was that?” “I’ll check,” Zayn said, leaping to his feet. Moments later, he returned, looking pale. “Uh… guys, we have a situation.” “What kind of situation?” Hussain asked suspiciously. “There’s a… um… snake in the kitchen,” Zayn stammered. “A what?!” Juveriya shrieked, jumping onto her chair. The room erupted into chaos as everyone panicked. Sameera and Zayn exchanged barely suppressed grins as they led the charge to “capture” the snake, which was, in reality, a cleverly disguised stuffed toy. Humain, ever the skeptic, watched the scene unfold with amusement. “You expect me to believe there’s a snake in a fully secured kitchen?” “Come see for yourself,” Sameera challenged, her expression daring. Humain sighed but followed her. When he spotted the toy snake, he rolled his eyes. “Really, Sameera?” “Okay, fine, you got us,” she admitted, laughing. “But admit it—it was funny!” Humain shook his head, a rare smile tugging at his lips. “You’re all impossible.” ___________________________________ A Step Closer to the Truth Later that night, Humain received a call from Faraz. “I’ve found something,” Faraz said. “It’s bigger than we thought.” “Go on,” Humain urged. Faraz explained that the real mastermind behind the embezzlement was someone outside the company—a rival businessman who had been using Azeem and others as pawns to destabilize the Siddiqui-Khan empire. “This person has been targeting your family for years,” Faraz said. “They’ve been waiting for the right moment to strike.” Humain’s grip on his phone tightened. “Send me everything you have.” After ending the call, Humain sat in silence, the weight of the revelation pressing down on him. This wasn’t just about money—it was personal. ___________________________________ A Midnight Conversation Unable to sleep, Humain found himself in the garden. To his surprise, Safa was already there, wrapped in a shawl and gazing at the stars. “Couldn’t sleep?” he asked, sitting down beside her. She shook her head. “Too much on my mind.” “Same,” he admitted. They sat in companionable silence for a while before Safa spoke. “You’ve been different lately. Quieter. More… distant.” Humain hesitated, then said, “There’s a lot going on. Work, family… it’s complicated.” “Complicated doesn’t mean you have to handle it alone,” Safa said softly. “We’re all here for you, you know.” Her words struck a chord, and for a moment, Humain considered telling her everything. But the risk was too great. Instead, he said, “I know. Thank you.” Safa smiled, and they sat together, the quiet night offering a brief reprieve from the chaos. ___________________________________ A Plan Takes Shape The next day, Humain and Salman gathered the family for a meeting. “We’ve uncovered something important,” Humain began. “But it’s going to require all of us to work together.” He explained the basics of the situation without revealing too much, emphasizing the need for caution. The family listened intently, their initial shock giving way to determination. “We’re with you,” Hussain said firmly. “Whatever it takes.” As they discussed their next steps, the bonds between them grew stronger. Despite their differences and the challenges ahead, they knew they could face anything together. ___________________________________ --- End of the chapter ---
