TRISHA’S POV
“You make my life complete, my love. I can't imagine myself ever being with anyone but you. I promise to be with you through thick and thin, even when the world is ending I promise to stick with you my love. I'm never going to hurt you, not in this life or even the next. I promise to never leave you, you are my world Trish.”
Hot tears were streaming down my face as I remembered those promises that he made to me in the past. He promised he would never hurt me. He promised he was going to choose me over and over again.
Sitting in the car, I tried my best to contain myself to not open the door and jump out.
The drive back home was one of torture and pain as I stared at Philip who held the wheel with a blank expression on his face.
Removing my gaze from him, I stared at the woman who had suddenly appeared to be the mother of Philip's child. She was sitting at the back seat with her son and the entire time, her gaze never left Philip
Her name was Lola. She was Philip's childhood friend who had traveled to New York five years ago, the same year Philip and I got married to head the branch her company had opened over there. She didn't even attend our wedding. How did she suddenly become pregnant for him? And her child was already 3 years old!
Philip cheated on me so early on in our marriage? I don’t want to even believe this. There has to be a reasonable explanation.
Reaching home, I sluggishly got down from the car. I was about walking inside when my knees gave in, making me fall to the ground. A hand held my body trying to pull me up, I raised my head as I stared at the person, it was Philip.
Immediately, I swatted his hands as I stared at him with hurt and pains in my eyes and with that I gently stood up and walked inside without giving him another glance.
30 minutes later, the door of our bedroom opened.
“Care to explain to me? Care to explain why you'll hurt me this way?” I asked softly with my head still bowed. The only answer I got was silence. I stood up and walked to where he was sitting as I violently shook him,
“I’m talking to you Philip. Don't I deserve an explanation?!” I said, screaming with fury, the pain in my heart overwhelming all my senses.
“I don't know. I really do not have an explanation,” Philip replied with a blank expression.
I stared at him in disbelief.
I really wanted my husband to clarify the issue. I wanted him to say it was all a lie.
“So what's going to become of me! How do you want me to hold my head up? I am going to be a thing of mockery. People are going to label me as the barren daughter in-law of the Carter family who drove her husband out to commit infidelity!” I raged louder with anger.
“What am I going to do? She can't stay here, she can't. I can't share my home nor you with another woman,” I struggled to say as I choked in tears.
“Mom has asked her to stay with us and she has to stay. And besides I can't let the mother of my child or my child live on the street!” Philip fired back at me.
Hearing those words from him, the last thin line of sanity I had snapped.
“Mom Mom Mom. All you keep saying is Mom. I've had enough of it already. I've got a mom too Philip! I've always indulged your Mom and put up with her attitudes and that of the rest of your family because I love you.”
“When your mom disgraced me at the mall I kept quiet, when Becky spilled wine on my dress claiming it was a mistake and humiliated me at your business dinner, I still didn't react. When Aunt Sarah came to the house and called me barren, reigned all manner of ungodly insults at me and even insulted my family,I still showed her respect. Even when your mom slapped me earlier today, I still didn't react. All this I did because I love you and I value this marriage with my life.
“I've been nothing but faithful to you. The only fault I had was not being able to give this family an heir which is clearly not my fault cause the doctor has assured both of us that we are medically okay. I’ve always put you and your family first before me. When your Mom asked me to stop working so that I could be a dutiful wife to you, I obeyed. I haver never ever gone against the wish of your family.
I paused my dream and my life for you and your family and this is how you guys treat me in the end? Asking me to welcome another woman and her child to my matrimonial home? Do you even care how I feel, huh? Do you care?” I wailed, feeling hurt and miserable.
Philip was standing there, staring at me. What was he thinking? I was expecting a word of comfort when he said, “I am getting married to her.”
I staggered back as his words caught me off guard. Fighting with the tears that were threatening to burst from my eyes. I was still trying to process what he just said, when he pulled a drawer from the bedside, retrieved an envelope, took out a booklet and threw it at me.
“Sign those papers Trisha Jones, we’re getting a divorce.”
I stared at the paper in disbelief and for a moment my body and brain shut down
