PHILIP'S POV
“I don't understand what I have done for you to treat me like this. I've done nothing but love you ever since we got married. You do not even see nor treat me like your wife. We are no f*****g housemates, you are my husband and I am your wife!” Lola snapped at me angrily.
Looking at her, all I could feel was irritation and disgust. I wasn't going to answer her because it will give her more ground to nag even further, so ignoring her was the best thing to do.
“I'm talking to you, don't you dare ignore me! I am so tired of your uptight attitude towards me. You're always acting as if I don't exist. You don't touch me, you don't make love to me and whenever I try to always come close to you, you are always shutting me out. I'm losing my damn mind Philip! Why are you acting this way? Or is it because of that good for nothing woman that—
“Don't you dare finish that statement Lola, else, you are going to regret it in a bad way. What are you even on about? You already knew there was no love in my heart for you from the onset. You knew this was a loveless marriage all along, so why are you always nagging?” I raged angrily at her because I had lost it already with her.
Picking up the water glass, I gulped the water all in one go, trying hard to contain my anger.
I had married her because I didn't want my son to grow up as a bastard, as an illegitimate child who would be shunned and cursed at. All I wanted was to play an important role in the life of my son.
If the DNA results had said otherwise, she wouldn't have been here. She would have been long gone. She wouldn't have been here nor married to me if I hadn't made that mistake that night at the party in New York. But still, I've always played my part in her life and that of my son, Eric.
She burst into her usual dramatic sobs, picking up her phone and was about dialing a number. Knowing what she was about to do, I pulled the phone forcefully from her, smashing it on the floor.
“Are you trying to test my patience? And let me warn you, you see that stunt that you and my mother pulled on me the last time, by drugging me to have s*x with you? Do not ever try that again next time because even my mother, your saviour won't be able to deliver you from my wrath.”
Walking away from the room, I glanced at my watch. I was already running late for the meeting at the office. Grandpa had said he had a big announcement to make today and he had made it clear for us all to be present at the meeting.
Getting into the car, I ordered the driver to drive a bit faster. My phone started vibrating, picking up the phone,
“Any news so far?” I asked, expecting a positive response this time around.
“No Boss, still no news yet. But I've mobilized a new set of guys from Orland and I'm very sure they are going to get—
“Shut up Harrison,” I hissed in anger as I ended the call. He can't even get one simple job done. How hard was it to find a simple woman for the past 5 years?
Where did she disappear to that night?
Where could she have gone to? How could she have left without a trace?
Where the f**k are you, Trisha Jones?
Coming back to the house later that night after giving her the divorce paper, she was nowhere to be found. Nanny Gladys and the gate keeper had said they didn't even see her leave the house, so how did she leave the house?
I was still deep in my thoughts when the driver's voice interrupted my thoughts.
“We are at the office now Sir,” Peter said as he opened the door, with his head bowed.
Stepping out of the car, I walked with heavy footsteps. All the Employees were bowing, shakingly as I walked past them but I didn't even care to acknowledge their greetings cause I was in no mood for that.
Opening the door to my office, I stared at the person who was standing close to the window with his gaze outside.
“Good morning Grandpa,”I greeted, wondering why he was here instead of being in the boardroom.
He removed his gaze from the window, “Morning, Grandson.” He stared at me hard as he pursed his lips but didn't say anything.
I really don’t know what he’s thinking nor do I care.
Smiling at me, he said,“Today’s going to be a lovely day. Hope you are ready?” And with that, he walked away.
******************
“As we all know, this company was built by my father, and was handed over to me by him before he died. And I have successfully taken this company to the greater heights it is now, but I can't take all the credits alone. My beloved grandson, Philip, the board of directors, the employees and a few special people should also be appreciated as well.
“And it is now right for me to pass down the company to a capable hand. With a standing ovation, and with an applause, I want us to welcome the new CEO of the CARTER GROUP.”
I darted my head towards Grandpa, gazing confusingly at him . A new CEO? Grandpa had never mentioned wanting to step down, so what was he saying?
The door opened to reveal a familiar face. My pupils dilated in surprise as I froze on my seat. A pang of guilt pricked my heart as my gaze fixed on her. I shoved my hands vigorously through my hair, because the temperature all of a sudden became too hot. For a second, I forgot how to breathe, all I did was stare into her almond eyes.
But there was something very different about those eyes. They didn't hold that gentleness anymore that couldn't even harm a little bird. She walked in with the aura of a domineering persona.
She swept her gazes on everyone as if we were all beneath her.
Her poise and elegance could intimidate anyone and even force them into defeat. Her face didn't hold that tenderness anymore as it reeks of pride and arrogance.
Grandpa stood up gracefully, the smile of a proud father on his face as he walked to her side, holding her hands, he led her to the head of the table and made her sit.
“Ladies and gentlemen. The new CEO of CARTER GROUP, Trisha Jones.”
