It was not long after Kael left when Maya called to tell me a cab had dropped her at the border. The moment I heard her voice, excitement rushed through me so quickly that I did not even bother to dress properly. I was still wearing Kael’s shorts and shirt, the fabric too big on me and carrying his scent, but I grabbed the car keys anyway. I wanted to show off the car a little. I could not even lie about it. It was not cheap, and it was not old like the one he drove. Kael had really tried, and as much as my pride hated admitting things too loudly, his effort pleased me.
