Kael looked stunned by my request.
I knew he would be worried, but I did not expect him to look that worried. I had thought about it all day, and the more I thought about it, the more avoiding Maya’s joining felt cowardly. Maya had been my friend since kindergarten. She had never truly betrayed me. She always stood by me and stuck her neck out for me, even when it cost her something. She had stood up for me in Marlow’s Diner and got slapped because of it.
I knew Darius must have fallen in love with Maya for him to choose her over Brianna and all the other girls from families ranked higher than hers.
