My hands slowed on her foot.
“He was mad at Kael for stealing you from him,” Maya continued. “Then he was mad at your father for blowing the issue out of proportion. He was willing to still have you and be with you since you did not know who Kael was, but he said he lost interest when you protected Kael from your brother and father when they were beating him. He said that was when he realised you had feelings for Kael.”
I looked away because I remembered that day too clearly. I had not understood what I was feeling then. I only knew I could not let them kill him. I had hated Kael and blamed him, but seeing him beaten on the floor had hurt me in a way I had not expected. Maybe Darius had seen the truth before I did.
