Clif-side escape

698 Words
The forest closed in around them, every branch reaching out like claws, the undergrowth thick and unforgiving. Ethan’s breath came in ragged gasps, but he pushed forward, pulling Rachel along as the sound of the growl grew louder. Something was out there, stalking them, and Caleb’s mocking voice rang in the distance. "Don’t run," Caleb taunted. "You can’t outrun what’s already inside you." Ethan barely had time to process the meaning of those words before the growl erupted again, closer this time. The creature was right behind them, its breath hot and heavy, like a beast on the hunt. Rachel stumbled, her foot catching on a root. Ethan jerked her upright, his grip firm but gentle. "Keep moving, Rachel. We can’t stop." Her face was pale, her eyes wide with terror, but she nodded, her feet picking up speed again. They had to keep going. There was no other choice. Ethan’s mind raced. Caleb was playing a twisted game, but what was this creature? And why was it hunting them? The questions burned at him, but the more important one was: how long before they ran out of the ground to cover? They pushed through the thick trees, their bodies heavy with exhaustion, but they couldn’t afford to slow down. The growl behind them was relentless, like the beat of a drum calling them toward their doom. Suddenly, the forest opened up into a small clearing. Ethan’s eyes darted around, searching for any sign of salvation. But all he saw was a jagged cliff face, the drop sharp and unforgiving. There was nowhere to go but forward, and the creature was almost upon them. "Up!" Ethan shouted, pointing to a narrow ledge that ran along the cliff-side. "We’ll climb." Rachel didn’t hesitate, scrambling up the rocks with surprising speed despite her fear. Ethan followed, pushing himself harder than he ever had before. His muscles screamed in protest, but there was no time to stop. They reached the top just as the creature appeared in the clearing below them. It was massive — a hulking, shadowy figure with eyes that glowed like embers, its mouth full of sharp teeth that gleamed in the moonlight. It paused, sniffing the air, its gaze locked on them. Ethan’s heart pounded in his chest as he crouched down beside Rachel, both of them hidden in the darkness above. The creature’s growl echoed through the trees, shaking the leaves and making the ground tremble beneath its feet. "Is it gone?" Rachel whispered, her voice a mix of fear and hope. Ethan stayed silent for a moment, his eyes fixed on the creature below. It hadn’t moved yet. But the longer they waited, the more he felt the pressure of time weighing on him. Caleb was out there, too, somewhere in the shadows. They couldn’t stay here forever. "We need to keep moving," he said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline coursing through his veins. "We’re not safe yet." But as they started to climb further along the ledge, a new sound made Ethan freeze. A low, echoing laugh — familiar and chilling. Caleb. "Thought you could escape me?" Caleb’s voice drifted up from below. "The woods aren’t the only thing that will hunt you tonight." Ethan’s blood ran cold. Caleb had followed them up the cliff, his footsteps light but purposeful. There was no way out of this. He couldn’t let Rachel see his fear, but deep down, he knew the truth: they were running out of options. Rachel’s voice, quiet but insistent, broke through his thoughts. “Ethan… what do we do?” He turned to her, the weight of her gaze settling on him. She was looking to him for answers, for hope — something to hold onto in this nightmare. “We keep fighting,” Ethan said, his voice firm. “We won’t stop.” Not for anything.” With that, he pulled her along, his eyes scanning the dark for any hint of an escape. The cliff-side stretched endlessly ahead of them, but Caleb was coming, and so was the creature. And no matter how far they ran, they couldn’t outrun the dark that was closing in. To be continued
