Chapter 5 – The Alpha’s Trial

1506 Words
Morning never really reached the cave. The light that slipped through the cracks looked like old gold, hesitant to touch the monsters hiding inside. Gu Qingxuan sat cross-legged beside the dying fire, grinding herbs with silent precision. Across from him, Luka tried to braid his own hair and failed spectacularly. “Oh my good boy,” the wolf groaned, “how do humans keep their manes so obedient?” “Soap,” Qingxuan said dryly. “And social skills.” Luka gasped. “Savage!” A low voice joined them. “Keep your noise down.” Ye Junli stepped from the shadows. He looked fully healed again—too quickly. The veins along his throat glowed faintly crimson under his pale skin. Qingxuan frowned. “You’re regenerating faster. That’s not normal.” “I fed,” Junli said simply. “On what?” Qingxuan asked warily. “On what was already dead.” Luka snorted. “Oh my good boy, poetic cannibalism! Ten points for creepy.” Junli ignored him. “The Alpha arrives soon. Be careful what you say. One insult and he will rip your spine out.” “Comforting,” Qingxuan muttered, pocketing his pestle. “Maybe I’ll just compliment his fur.” The air shifted—pressure, a pulse, like the cave itself inhaled. Then came footsteps—heavy, deliberate. The wolves guarding the entrance dropped to one knee as a shadow filled the tunnel. Ragan returned, but this time he wasn’t alone. Behind him walked a colossal figure draped in a pelt of midnight gray, eyes burning the color of molten metal. Every step made the ground tremble. “The Alpha,” Luka whispered. Qingxuan’s first thought: I’ve treated elephants smaller than this man. The Alpha’s voice rolled through the chamber. “Which of you carries the vampire mark?” Junli stepped forward. “I do.” “Liar.” The Alpha’s gaze speared Qingxuan. “The scent of sunlight hides under his blood. A mortal touched by darkness.” “Oh my good boy,” Luka murmured, “this is gonna be fun.” The Alpha stalked closer, sniffing. “Human healer. You brought plague into sacred ground. Give me one reason not to break your neck.” Qingxuan straightened, meeting his glowing eyes. “I’m the reason your cave isn’t full of corpses. You’re welcome.” A ripple of shocked laughter moved through the wolves. Luka slapped a hand over his mouth. “Oh my good boy, he did not just—” Junli’s lips twitched, almost proud. The Alpha’s smile was all fangs. “Bold. Foolish.” “Efficient,” Qingxuan corrected. “I heal things. Even arrogant ones.” Ragan growled, “You dare insult—” “Silence.” The Alpha raised one clawed hand. “I like him.” Qingxuan blinked. “Excuse me?” The giant chuckled. “Few have the spine to speak to me that way. Perhaps you will survive the trial.” “What trial?” Qingxuan asked. “The law of balance. You enter our land; you prove your worth.” The Alpha gestured to the cavern floor. “Blood or courage. Choose.” Junli stepped forward instantly. “I’ll take his place.” The Alpha’s eyes flared. “The bond forbids substitution. If he bleeds, you feel it. If he dies, you die. That makes the trial fair.” Qingxuan sighed. “Of course it does.” Luka whispered, “Oh my good boy, maybe pick courage? Less mess.” “Fine,” Qingxuan said. “I choose courage.” The Alpha smiled wider. “Then face fear itself.” He slammed his palm to the ground. Runes flared around them, crimson and silver interlocking like teeth. A roar burst from nowhere—the air itself tearing open. From the magic circle rose a creature made of smoke and bone—a nightmare with a wolf’s skull and wings of shadow. Qingxuan’s heart leapt into his throat. “What the hell is that?!” “Your fear,” the Alpha said simply. Luka backed away. “Oh my good boy, even I don’t mess with that thing.” Junli’s hand brushed Qingxuan’s arm. “You can still back down.” Qingxuan shook his head. “I’m already half-owned by a vampire and allergic to wolves. What’s one more bad decision?” The specter lunged. Qingxuan dove aside, grabbing a handful of needles. They glinted with the faint gold of his inner qi. “Let’s see if fear bleeds,” he muttered. He flicked a needle—it pierced the creature’s misty form, bursting light. The monster shrieked, re-forming instantly. “Oh good,” he said, “invincible. My favorite type.” Junli started forward, but the Alpha blocked him. “No interference.” The shadow beast lashed out; claws of smoke raked Qingxuan’s chest. Pain exploded—then mirrored across Junli’s body. He staggered, fangs snapping. Luka gasped. “Oh my good boy, they share damage!” Qingxuan felt heat searing under his ribs—the blood seal pulsing wildly. Instinct screamed. He jabbed both palms forward, channeling energy through every needle left in his belt. Light burst outward—pure, blinding gold. The specter froze, wailing, cracks spreading across its body. Qingxuan shouted through his teeth, “You’re not real!” With a final pulse, the creature shattered into dust. Silence thundered. The Alpha stared down at him, expression unreadable. “You broke the spell. Impossible for a mortal.” Qingxuan panted, knees buckling. “I’m not ordinary. I’m annoyed.” Junli caught him before he fell. Their bond flared—heat spreading where skin met. Luka exhaled. “Oh my good boy, that was awesome! You lit the cave like fireworks!” The Alpha folded his arms. “The trial ends. You live.” “Wonderful,” Qingxuan muttered. “Do I get a certificate?” Instead, the Alpha knelt—a mountain bowing. “Human healer. You carry light that burns darkness. My clan owes you debt.” Junli’s eyes narrowed. “What do you know of his light?” The Alpha’s gaze flicked between them. “The mark you share is not mere bond. It is awakening. When the Bloodmoon meets the Sun-Heart, the world trembles.” Qingxuan frowned. “Sun-Heart?” “The power inside you,” the Alpha said. “Dormant, but growing. You are not just healer—you are key.” Luka blinked. “Oh my good boy, key to what?” The Alpha rose, voice echoing. “To the end of the curse that binds blood and beast alike.” Before anyone could question him, the cave’s wardstones flared red. Ragan rushed in, eyes wide. “Alpha! Hunters—inside the mountain!” “How?” Luka gasped. “The wards—” “They used sacred silver,” Ragan growled. “They break everything.” The Alpha’s expression hardened. “Get the healer out.” Junli stepped forward. “I’m not leaving him.” “You will,” the Alpha barked. “If they take him, we all die.” Qingxuan tried to stand. “I’m not running again—” A thunderous crack cut him off. The ceiling split; daylight stabbed through, searing Junli’s skin. He hissed, smoke rising from his arms. “Junli!” Qingxuan cried, grabbing him. The vampire’s body trembled, torn between fury and agony. The Alpha seized Luka’s shoulder. “Take them through the back tunnels. Now!” Luka nodded, face suddenly serious. “Oh my good boy, this way!” They sprinted down a narrow passage as explosions shook the cave behind them. Junli staggered; Qingxuan hooked an arm around his waist, half-dragging him forward. “You burn, I run—we’re a team now!” he shouted over the noise. Junli managed a pained smirk. “You never obey orders.” “Doctor’s privilege!” A burst of silver fire slammed into the wall beside them. Luka howled, shielding them with a wall of stone. Through the collapsing tunnel they ran, the roar of battle fading behind. When they finally burst into open air, cold wind hit their faces. Below the cliff stretched endless forest—and smoke rising from the wolf den. Qingxuan turned, breath ragged. “Luka—your clan—” The boy’s eyes gleamed wet in the sunlight. “They’ll fight. They always do.” Junli’s voice was quiet, dangerous. “This war just began.” Qingxuan glanced between them, heart pounding, the blood seal burning hotter than ever. Somewhere in the distance, a horn sounded—long, mournful, human. Luka swallowed hard. “Oh my good boy… they’ve called the Hunt.” Junli’s eyes flared crimson. “Then let them come.” He turned to Qingxuan, voice low. “Run with me—or die with them.” The wind howled. The sunlight hit the blood mark on Qingxuan’s chest, making it blaze scarlet and gold. He met Junli’s gaze—and the world seemed to tilt.
