Chapter 1: Anya's Struggle The humid Manila air hung heavy, thick with the scent of exhaust fumes and frying street food. Anya woke with a start to the insistent blare of jeepney horns outside her tiny apartment. Sunlight, weak and filtered through the grimy window, barely illuminated the cramped space. Dirty laundry lay piled on the floor, a testament to her overwhelming workload. A persistent drip from a leak in the ceiling added to the symphony of discomfort. The air was thick with the smell of something rotten a forgotten piece of fruit, perhaps mingling with the ever present dampness. Anya sighed, the weight of her responsibilities pressing down on her. She was a bright college student, but her academic dreams were constantly overshadowed by the harsh realities of her life. Her father had abandoned them when she was seven, a memory that still stung with a sharp ache. His promise to return remained unfulfilled, a phantom hope that had long since faded. Then, at seventeen, her mother passed away, leaving Anya to navigate the treacherous waters of debt and responsibility alone. The weight of their financial struggles was a constant companion, a heavy cloak that stifled her aspirations. She had taken every job she could find, from waitressing to cleaning, babysitting to dishwashing. She’d even considered working as a street vendor, selling anything she could get her hands on. The desperation clawed at her, a relentless hunger that gnawed at her insides. She needed money, not just for rent and food, but for Miguel’s school supplies, his dreams, his future. Without money, they'd end up on the streets, a terrifying prospect that haunted her every waking moment. She fried two eggs, a meager breakfast with a day old rice for herself and Miguel. The single pan sizzled on the tiny gas stove, the sound a stark contrast to the silence that usually filled their apartment in the early morning hours. When Miguel woke, his face etched with the worry that mirrored her own, he asked about money for his school project. Anya's heart ached. "We don't have any extra, Miguel," she said, her voice barely a whisper, "but I'll try to ask my boss for an advance." "Ate" (older sister) Miguel called her "we have a parent meeting today at school will you be able to come?" He ask "I have work, but don't worry I'll try" He nodded, his young shoulders slumping with a weariness that was far too familiar. He ate his breakfast, his small hands clutching his worn schoolbag, and left for school. Anya started getting ready for her own classes, the weight of her exam looming over her. She couldn't afford to fail. She had to succeed, not just for herself, but for Miguel. Just as she was about to leave, a knock came at the door. She knew who it was. Their landlord. The familiar dread tightened its grip around her heart. "Anya, the rent," he demanded. "Sir, I promise to pay this week," she pleaded, "My mother just passed away…" "I've given you enough time," he interrupted, " I'm really sorry sir" she apologised "fine one more week, or you'll have to leave." Anya thanked him, her heart sinking.
