Chapter 3: A Birthday Surprise and the new job
but when she flipped the switch…
The sight of her brother, Miguel, and her best friend Liz standing before her, holding a cake adorned with balloons numbered "1" and "8," shattered Anya's composure. A wave of emotion washed over her; the tears she'd been holding back finally spilled forth. Lost in the whirlwind of studying and working, she hadn't even realized it was her birthday. Miguel and Liz gently set down the cake and balloons, and give Anya a warm embrace. They moved to the living room, its cleanliness a stark contrast to Anya's usual state of disarray. The floor, gleaming and spotless, was a revelation Anya couldn't even recall its color. Liz's words, "I cleaned it see, it's better, less stressful," were a testament to her unwavering friendship. Anya was overwhelmed by the gesture her best friend had sacrificed her workday to plan this surprise and restore order to their apartment. "Thank you, Liz," Anya choked out, tears welling up once more. "I don't even know what I'd do without you." Liz responded with warmth, "You're welcome, Anya. I'm always here for you and Miguel. You guys are like my family now." Their heartfelt exchange gave way to a shared dinner, a moment of peace before the storm. The tranquility was shattered, however, when Anya revealed she'd been fired from her job, the casualty of a broken plate. Liz and Miguel offered comfort, assuring her that she would find another job, their words a lifeline in her distress. The comforting presence of her loved ones provided a much needed respite, a temporary refuge from the harsh realities of her situation. But the weight of unemployment pressed heavily on her.
The next day dawned, bringing with it the daunting task of finding a new job. Anya, after preparing a simple meal for Miguel, ventured out into the city, her heart heavy with the weight of her circumstances. Hours bled into one another, each fruitless search compounding her despair. The weight of her responsibilities the looming rent, the threat of homelessness pressed down on her. She was on the verge of giving up, her hope dwindling with each passing moment. Just as she was about to succumb to defeat, a familiar face emerged from the crowd Alexa, her high school friend. Their reunion was a brief respite, a moment of connection amidst the turmoil. Alexa's revelation her work as a dancer at a club called the Crimson Orchid was unexpected. Even more surprising was her offer the club needed new waitresses, the previous one having resigned after a disturbing incident involving a VIP customer. Anya hesitated, the implications of working in such an environment weighing heavily on her mind. But the stark reality of her financial situation, the urgent need for money to pay rent, left her with little choice. She had to try.
The interview with the manager was brief but decisive. Anya was offered the job, starting the following day. The hours were long 6 pm to 1 am but the pay was significantly better than her previous job, a glimmer of hope in the darkness. The decision was made she would face the challenges ahead, clinging to the promise of financial stability.
