Into The Wild

The rogue wolves slowly emerged from the shadows, surrounding Luna from every direction. Their dirty fur, old scars, and hungry eyes made it clear that these were not ordinary rogues. They were killers who survived by hunting travelers foolish enough to enter the wild lands alone. Luna forced herself to remain calm. Fear would not help her now. The large rogue standing in front of her smiled cruelly as he looked her up and down. "You smell like pack territory." The other rogues laughed. "And not just any pack," another one said. "Silver Ridge." The leader's grin widened. "A healer too. That's even better." Luna slowly stepped backward. The rogues immediately followed. Every escape route disappeared. Her heart pounded inside her chest. She had spent years treating injuries and illnesses. Fighting had never been her strength. Still, she refused to beg. The leader seemed amused by her silence. "You know, most people start crying by now." Luna stared directly at him. "I'm not most people." The rogue's eyes narrowed. For a moment, the forest became completely silent. Then the leader laughed loudly. "I like her." The other rogues laughed with him. Unfortunately for Luna, their amusement changed nothing. The circle around her continued shrinking. The leader finally stopped smiling. "Hand over your bag." Luna remained still. "Or what?" The rogue's expression darkened. "Or we'll take it from your dead body." The threat hung heavily in the air. Luna knew they were serious. Very serious. Her eyes quickly searched the surrounding forest. Trees. Rocks. Shadows. Nothing useful. No help. No rescue. Nothing. The leader took another step forward. "Last chance." Luna's fingers tightened around the strap of her bag. Inside were her medical supplies, her savings, and everything she owned. She had already lost her home. She refused to lose everything else. "No." The rogue sighed dramatically. "Such a shame." Then he lunged. Everything happened at once. Luna turned and ran. Branches scratched her arms as she sprinted through the forest. Behind her, angry growls exploded into the air. The chase had begun. Her lungs burned almost immediately. She could hear the rogues crashing through the trees behind her. They were faster. Stronger. More experienced. Luna knew she could not outrun them forever. Still, she kept running. A fallen tree appeared ahead. She jumped over it. A root caught her foot. She stumbled but managed to stay upright. The rogues were getting closer. Too close. One suddenly appeared beside her. Sharp claws reached for her shoulder. Luna dodged at the last second. The attack missed. Barely. The rogue cursed and continued chasing her. Fear flooded Luna's body. She pushed herself harder. Faster. Desperately searching for any way out. Then the ground suddenly disappeared beneath her feet. Luna screamed. The earth collapsed. She fell down a steep slope covered with loose rocks and dirt. Pain shot through her body as she rolled downhill. Finally she crashed into a large tree at the bottom. Everything became still. For several seconds, she couldn't breathe. Her entire body hurt. Slowly, she forced herself to sit up. Blood trickled from a cut on her forehead. Her ankle throbbed painfully. Above her, angry growls echoed from the top of the slope. The rogues had found her. Luna's heart sank. She tried standing. Pain shot through her injured ankle. Not broken. But close enough. Running would be difficult now. The leader appeared at the top of the slope. He looked down and smiled. "Nowhere left to run." The remaining rogues joined him. Luna looked around desperately. The slope behind her led deeper into the forest. Ahead stood enormous ancient trees unlike any she had ever seen before. Something about the place felt strange. The air itself seemed different. Older. More powerful. Even the rogues hesitated. The leader frowned. "We shouldn't be here." Another rogue nodded nervously. "This area is cursed." For the first time, Luna noticed genuine fear in their eyes. The realization confused her. These wolves feared something. Something worse than them. The leader shook his head. "Forget it. Kill her and let's leave." The rogues started moving down the slope. Suddenly a powerful wind swept through the forest. Every tree began shaking violently. The air became heavy. Unnaturally heavy. The rogues froze. Luna froze. A deep growl echoed through the forest. The sound did not seem natural. It felt ancient. Primal. Terrifying. The leader's face turned pale. "No..." Another growl followed. Louder this time. The ground trembled beneath everyone's feet. Birds exploded from the treetops. Animals fled through the undergrowth. The entire forest seemed to react to the presence approaching them. The rogues immediately backed away. Fear filled their eyes. Real fear. The kind that came from facing something far beyond their strength. Then it appeared. A massive black wolf stepped from the shadows between the ancient trees. Luna stopped breathing. The creature was enormous. Far larger than any wolf she had ever seen. Its black fur shimmered beneath the sunlight. Silver markings glowed faintly across its body. Golden eyes stared at the rogues with terrifying calmness. The forest itself seemed to bow before its presence. No one moved. No one dared. The rogue leader whispered a single word. A word filled with terror. "Lycan." The giant wolf's gaze shifted toward him. That single glance was enough. The rogues immediately turned and ran. Every one of them. No hesitation. No bravery. Only panic. Within seconds they disappeared into the forest. Silence returned. Luna remained where she was. Unable to move. Unable to look away. The giant black wolf stood only a short distance from her now. Its golden eyes slowly turned toward her. The moment their gazes met, something strange happened. A faint warmth spread through Luna's chest. Different from the mate bond. Different from anything she had ever felt before. The wolf continued staring at her. Not like a predator. Not like a hunter. Almost as if it recognized her. The feeling lasted only a few seconds. Then the wolf suddenly stiffened. Its ears moved. As if it had heard something far away. The creature looked toward the mountains in the distance. A low growl escaped its throat. Then, without warning, it turned and disappeared back into the forest. Just like that. Gone. Luna sat alone beneath the ancient trees. Her heart still racing. Her ankle still hurting. Her mind completely overwhelmed. She had almost been killed. She had been saved by a Lycan. And somehow... She had the strange feeling that this would not be the last time their paths crossed.
