Kayden was taken aback.
He was too speechless to respond. He could not comprehend how or why someone could reject such a woman. He never anticipated hearing that from her.
Ayora was sobbing uncontrollably. She had finally revealed her secret. She knew that it would be a surprise to him but his silence was painful. She had hoped for comfort or sympathy, but all she received was silence.
She had always looked forward to meeting her mate but all her dreams were shattered instantly because her parents sold her. She could not help but collapse to the ground and cry intensely.
Ayora's loud sobs brought Kayden out of his state of confusion.
"Baby" Kayden cooed. "Baby, please don't cry. It's okay," he said as he hugged her.
"You don't have to comfort me. *hick* You can laugh if you like. *hick* I won't get angry."She said between sobs.
"I'm not going to laugh at you doll. It's alright. I don't hate you. I feel even more attracted to you than I was before. "He said with a small smile.
"Give me a chance Ayora, let me show you that I'm not the same as he is. I won't hurt you Ayora. Give me a chance to take care of you, please, "He said with pleading eyes.
"I don't know if I can trust you yet," Ayora said between sniffles.
"Then let me show that you can, "Kayden said with a determined smile.
It took a while to soothe Ayora as she was still recovering from the hurt of the rejection by her former mate. She later informed Kayden that the rejection had occurred that morning, and she had just left her pack a few hours ago. She had been through a lot in twenty-four hours. After a few while, she became exhausted, her eyes swollen, and eventually drifted off to sleep on a couch in his office. She looked so delicate and fragile that he was afraid she would break at the slightest movements. Suddenly, he felt a strong sense of protectiveness towards her all over again. He understood that the walls around her heart were towering high, not solely due to the rejection. He had a suspicion that she had been a victim of abuse but refrained from making assumptions and avoided delving too deeply into her past to prevent causing her more pain. He intended to unravel her gradually, taking all the time necessary to do so.
He realized it would be a challenge to earn Ayora's trust and love, but he was determined to make an effort to change that have it anyway. He also wanted her to be comfortable around his people. Despite being from different races, werewolves, and lycans could coexist. He already knew she would make a wonderful queen for his people, although he knew not everyone would accept her easily. The primary concern he faced was the looming accusation of trespassing over her. According to their laws, a trespasser would be thrown into the dungeon without food and water for days on end. Some might even be whipped if the situation demands it. Most shifters do not last through the punishments and often die halfway through. He didn't like the idea of putting her in there even if it was the right thing to do. He couldn't bring himself to do that to her, not after he promised not to hurt her. He was determined to keep her even if it meant binding her to him. He had lost too much already, he wasn't ready to lose more.
Ayora woke up due to the sunlight shining on her face and found herself in an unfamiliar room in changed clothes. She suspected that Kayden had moved her and arranged for someone to change her clothes but she had slept through it all. She facepalmed as she scolded herself inwardly about it. She went red when she thought about how she had shed tears in his arms not too long ago. It was mortifying. As she sat up, she took in the interior of the room. To say it was beautiful was an understatement. It seemed to follow a beige tone but with white furniture and accents to compliment it. As she was admiring the room, a knock came from the door on the other side. She quickly scrambled back to the bed to pretend to be asleep to whoever was behind the door.
"Ayora, can I come in" Kayden's voice called out from the other side but she was not quite ready to speak to him yet so she proceeded with her act. She stayed still and silent as she had often done in her pack to hide from Doma and her gang. She hoped he would take the hint and leave, but it seemed like she had other plans.
Kayden wanted to see her. He knew it was wrong but he wanted to do it either way. He couldn't focus while knowing that she was just in the room opposite his. All he wanted to do was to check up on her if she was still asleep or possibly bring her a meal if she was awake. As he closed in on the bed, he could see her tightly shut her eyes and shift a bit and smile. 'She must be embarrassed about her little outburst yesterday, not that I minded one bit though' he said inwardly.
"Ayora, people don't squeeze their eyes so hard when they are asleep you know' he said with a grin.
Ayora knew she had been caught and there was no point in pretending any longer. "You win," she said shyly. "I know," he said with the grin still on his face. She blushed shyly, embarrassed at her flimsy attempt at hiding. She wondered why, but she was looking forward to seeing him. "Good morning Kayden," she said not meeting his eyes. "Hate to break it to you love, but it's past noon already," Kayden said as he tried to hide his laughter.
"WHAT!!!" Ayora screamed as she scrambled to open the blinds and look outside. Indeed, the sun was high in the sky. Turns out she had slept longer than she thought. "Why didn't you wake me" she said as heat began to feel her cheeks. She was embarrassed at how long she slept. "Because I didn't feel the need to. You were tired and you deserved rest, so I decided to let you sleep a little longer," he replied nonchalantly.
"Still, you could have woken me up," she said with a small pout. KAyden felt like kissing her right but he knew that the consequences could be dire so he refrained from doing it.
"Well, you can't do anything about it now, can you? Instead, let's get you something to eat. What would you like?" Kayden said.
"I don't know so why don't you pick" Ayora mumbled. She had never been given the option of choosing her meals as most of her meals in the Black Hearts pack were the leftovers from the meals of the other pack members and most days, there was hardly enough to eat so she ended up surviving on the wild game on days she was allowed to hunt or go for a run.
"Okay then, freshen up. I'll be back for you in thirty minutes" Kayden said as he walked out.
