The New Name

Emily wanted to feel offended when she first heard Mr. Miller’s new name for her, but she wasn’t. She wanted to experience anger or shame, but the feelings just weren’t there. Somehow, she recognized this new name, lurking deep within her consciousness. Not only wasn’t she offended, she immediately accepted the new name. It felt familiar to her. She still had no idea what was happening to her.
“Please don’t be offended, Emily,” Mr. Miller said. “I don’t mean this in a demeaning or disrespectful way at all, but would you mind if I called you Pretty t**s from now on?”
Only one answer came to her mind.
“As you wish, Mr. Miller.”
“If you like the name, I can have it legally changed to Pretty t**s. Would you allow me to do that?”
