The Arrangement

Chapter 3: The Arrangement Morning came too quickly for Amelia. She barely slept. Not because of noise or discomfort—but because of the document she had seen the night before. Knight Group Holdings. That name stayed in her mind like a warning she didn’t understand yet. When she stepped into the kitchen, the atmosphere immediately told her something had shifted. Eleanor was already seated. Robert was already there too. But neither of them spoke at first. That alone was unusual. Amelia moved quietly to prepare breakfast, but Eleanor stopped her. “Sit,” she said. Amelia froze slightly. She wasn’t used to being told to sit at the table. She slowly obeyed. Something about the room felt like a meeting, not a family breakfast. Once Amelia sat, Eleanor exhaled. “About yesterday,” she began. Amelia stayed silent. Robert placed his hands together on the table. “There is a way out of our situation,” he said. Amelia frowned slightly. “A way out?” Eleanor nodded. “Yes.” A pause. Then she added carefully: “But it comes with terms.” Amelia’s stomach tightened. “Terms for what?” Eleanor looked at Robert briefly before speaking again. “For the debt.” Silence. Amelia’s mind immediately went back to the number she had seen. Six hundred thousand dollars. Her voice was quieter now. “What kind of terms?” Robert cleared his throat. “There is an offer,” he said. Amelia’s eyes narrowed slightly. “From who?” Eleanor didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she stood and retrieved a folder from the cabinet. She placed it on the table in front of Amelia. Amelia stared at it for a moment before opening it. Inside were formal documents. Legal wording. Seals. Signatures. And at the top— Knight Group Holdings Her breath slowed. She looked up slowly. “This is… a job offer?” Robert nodded. “Yes.” Amelia frowned. “I don’t understand. Why would a company like this offer me a job? I have no qualifications for anything like this.” Eleanor’s fingers tightened slightly. “It’s not a normal job.” That statement immediately made Amelia uncomfortable. “What do you mean?” A heavy silence followed. Then Robert finally spoke. “It’s employment at Knight Manor.” The name landed differently this time. Not just a company. A place. A private estate. Amelia looked between them. “Why would I work at a billionaire’s estate?” Eleanor hesitated again. Longer this time. Then she said it. “Because they requested you specifically.” The words didn’t make sense. Amelia blinked. “Requested me?” “Yes.” “Why?” Neither of them answered immediately. That silence was becoming a pattern. Amelia pushed back her chair slightly. “No. This doesn’t make sense. I don’t know anyone at Knight Manor.” Eleanor finally looked at her directly. “That’s because this isn’t about knowing someone.” Amelia’s heartbeat slowed. “Then what is it about?” Robert spoke quietly. “It’s about the debt.” The room went still. Amelia’s eyes widened slightly. “…what?” Eleanor exhaled slowly. “The offer is connected to repayment.” Amelia stared at her. The realization came slowly. Too slowly. Then all at once. “No,” she said immediately. Eleanor stood. “Amelia—” “No.” Her voice was firmer now. “This has nothing to do with me. I didn’t take that debt.” Robert’s face tightened. “We know.” “Then why am I involved?” Silence. Again. Amelia’s hands clenched slightly. “Tell me.” Eleanor finally spoke. “They want someone reliable. Someone disciplined. Someone they can trust.” Amelia laughed bitterly. “So you’re saying they picked me because I’m obedient?” Robert flinched slightly. “That’s not—” “Yes, it is.” Her voice shook slightly now. “But I still don’t understand why this involves me at all.” Eleanor stepped closer. “Because without this arrangement, we lose everything.” Amelia froze. The words hit harder than expected. Eleanor continued. “The house. Our assets. Everything will be taken.” Amelia’s voice dropped. “That’s not my responsibility.” Robert looked down. “I know.” “But?” A pause. Eleanor spoke quietly. “But we don’t have another option.” The words hung in the air. Heavy. Final. Amelia stood slowly. “So you’re asking me to fix your mistake.” Eleanor didn’t deny it. Amelia’s voice sharpened slightly. “And what exactly is this ‘arrangement’?” Robert finally spoke again. “It’s a one-year contract.” Amelia narrowed her eyes. “For what?” Eleanor slid another document forward. Amelia opened it slowly. Her eyes scanned the page. Employment terms. Residence requirement. Strict conduct rules. And then— A condition that made her go still. Employee must reside at Knight Manor full-time. Her fingers tightened around the paper. “No.” Eleanor’s voice softened. “Amelia, please listen—” “No.” She stood abruptly. “This is not a job. This is control.” Robert sighed heavily. “It’s survival.” Amelia looked at them both. Something inside her cracked—not loudly, but deeply. “You don’t get to decide my life because you made bad decisions.” Eleanor’s expression hardened slightly. “We raised you.” Amelia froze. The sentence was meant to guilt her. But it didn’t land the way they expected. Instead, she felt something colder. “You raised me?” she repeated quietly. “You turned me into your maid.” Silence. No one denied it. That silence said everything. Amelia stepped back slowly. “You didn’t ask me. You didn’t even consider me.” Eleanor’s voice tightened. “We had no choice.” Amelia’s eyes burned slightly. “There is always a choice.” A long silence followed. Then Robert spoke quietly. “If we refuse the offer… we lose everything within weeks.” Amelia stared at them. For the first time, she saw it clearly. They weren’t asking. They were pushing her toward a decision they had already emotionally accepted. She turned away slightly. Her breath was uneven now. “I need time.” Eleanor nodded quickly. “You can think about it.” But Amelia already knew something. This wasn’t something she could simply think about. Because whatever Knight Manor was… it was not just a job. And whatever Xavier Knight wanted… was not ordinary employment. That night, Amelia sat alone in her room again. The contract lay open beside her. She read the same line over and over. Full-time residence required. Her chest felt tight. She closed the document slowly. Then whispered to herself: “What kind of place is this?” Outside her window, the night was quiet. But for the first time in a long time— Amelia felt like her life was no longer in her hands. Somewhere far away, a man she had never met was already part of her future. And she didn’t even know his name yet.
