Wren

821 Words
I was walking down the stairs, hoping not to wake anyone. I was careful and had my backpack in hand with my school books and a change of clothes. I was almost to the door when a voice called out in the dark. “Wren?” I winced, turning around. Gwen, the Nordic pack’s Luna, and my adoptive mother. She still wore her nightgown underneath a robe. Her loose auburn hair was falling on her back, and her deep blue eyes were filled with tiredness. “Did I wake you?” I asked. “No, your father woke me up with his snoring again.” She replied with a tired smile. “I’m sorry about that.” “Not your fault; you’re going out on the run this early?” “Yes, I need to clear my head.” “Doesn’t school start today also?” “I’ll head there after my run; I have an extra set of clothes in my backpack.” “Wren…” “I’ll be fine,” I told her. “You know you can talk to us…especially after that…….” “I’m going,” I started, leaving Gwen alone in the main house. I waited until I was out of sight before turning; I could feel the wind through my fur as I ran across the pack’s land. I just needed to clear my head; so much had happened between the end of school and now the start. My mind returned to one of the summer nights when my life was changed. I still remember the ember eyes as they watched me. I could hear the howl of Tempest and the smell of books and ink. I could see the faces of worry and disgust, but part of me didn’t care. Yet before I could say anything, I was taken away. I still didn’t know my mate’s name and probably wouldn’t. The way my “father” talked; I wasn’t going to any more of the meetings in the palace. I knew why; he wanted to protect me…after what happened to my birth parents. Yet I still wanted to see the amber eyes that haunt me even as I sleep. Wren it’s time for school. I heard the voice of the alpha in my head. I sighed, transforming and putting on a fresh pair of clothes before walking back into view. I was greeted by the sight of my father and mother standing beside my car with the pack’s beta Timo. “Wren.” He greeted me with a smile. “Hello, Mr. Timo,” I replied, nodding. “Timo is going to take you to school.” My father said. Anders Merida is the alpha of the Nordic pack and my adoptive father. He is known for his fairness to others but also the protectiveness of his crew, which meant that he didn’t like me going alone or Gwen in fear that someone would attack us. I understood it, but I’m almost 18. I need to be a little wild. “I can drive….” “Timo is going to drive you.” “But….” “My offer of home school with the pack’s elders still stands.” My father warned. “Alright,” I said in defeat. I watched as father relaxed a little, his blue eyes showing his age and grey locks between soft yellow. I kissed him and Gwen on the cheek before getting into the car. Once we were out of sight, I sighed. “Milady?” “I’m fine, Timo….” “I have been watching you since you first came to the house. I can tell you are not.” “It’s just that I’m restless.” “Well, it is a start to the new school year, but don’t worry, Emily and Madeline will be there.” “You’re right; it’s a new school year, at a new school, at least for Maddie. It will be fun.” I joked. “Milady, just promise me that you three will stay out of trouble….” “Timo, it’s us. What can happen?” “You and Miss Maddie are fine. It’s when you are with Miss Emily.” “What do you mean?” “Everyone says that girl is blessed but not in a good way….” “It might be true that Em has been in the company of fairies. She is still my best friend.” “I understand that milady, but remember she is also a human.” “I’m just telling you this for your good. Sometimes, humans are the most dangerous beings in this world.” “Some would call those of mystics or our blood the same way.” “Yes, but we are animals. It is in our nature; humans, on the other hand, do it for one thing.” “And what is that?” “Greed.”
