Chapter Six: New Course
I sat opposite Simeon in his large office, the rumbling noise of the city outside reaching us in whispers. The light through the large windows scattered around the polished wood of the desk, where Simeon had laid a few documents. He was looking at me, his gaze, in its way, considering something unspoken. My mind was still tangled from the events of the past week: the conversation with Alex, the overwhelming emotions I had confronted, and the constant shadow of my past, which seemed to follow me wherever I went. But now, here I was, facing a new crossroads.
Simeon leaned back in his chair, his dark eyes delving into mine. "Elizabeth," he started smoothly, an undercurrent of gravity to his tone. "I know you have had it pretty bad these last few days, but I wanted to ask you something."
My heart missed a beat as I looked into his eyes, not knowing what was coming. "What's that?" I tried to keep my voice light, despite the tension suddenly filling the air.
He paused, as if choosing his words. "I was thinking of how you can make something constructive out of your talents," he said, his eyes not leaving mine. "I know you studied accounting. I have a few projects coming up that require someone of your caliber. I was wondering if you'd be interested in joining my team-as my personal accountant.
I blinked, taken aback by the offer. Simeon Blackwood-powerful, mysterious, and in control-wanted me to work for him? The thought had never crossed my mind. His offer wasn't about a job but an invitation into his world-a world I still didn't fully comprehend.
"Are you sure?" I asked, still trying to process. "I mean, I'm not exactly a professional yet. I've done some work on the side, but—"
He raised a hand and gently cut me off. "I have seen your work. And I know you are capable. Besides, I do have the resources to support you while you settle in. The position would be yours if you wanted it.
I adjusted my seat, the weight of his words settling in. Really take such a step? Work with Simeon, drawing me into his world? The very prospect of perhaps seeing him every day stirred something in my stomach that I wasn't ready to shed light on. But, staying on in town with the regular catching up with Alex was just so unacceptable. To see him around in places we frequented, the name echoing in my mind from time to time, was too much. I needed to move forward, take control of my life once again. And maybe this was the chance I needed.
But could I handle it? Could I separate my emotions from the practicalities of the job?
"I am not so sure I am ready for such a huge step," I whispered, my eyes suddenly dropping to my hands. "I mean, working for you means stepping into a different world. It's not about the numbers, but everything else that comes with your. position.
Simeon was silent for a moment, weighing my words. Then he spoke again, and his voice was steady, reassuring. "Elizabeth, I'm not asking you to dive into anything without your consent. Take your time. But I believe you have the strength and the intelligence to succeed. I just wanted to offer you the opportunity if you feel it's right for you."
I looked up at him, searching his face for any hidden motives, but found none. He was being genuine-this wasn't about manipulating me or pushing me into something I didn't want. It was an offer, plain and simple.
"I'll think about it," I said finally, my voice steady, though my mind was swirling with conflicting emotions. "I need some time to figure things out.
He smiled then, a small but warm gesture. "Of course. No rush. But remember, the offer stands."
I nodded, but by that time my mind had already fluttered ahead. A big decision-an opportunity to get everything right for me. I fled my past behind to forget the pain Alex caused me, but was this a job worth starting anew working for a man as unpredictable as Simeon, or was it going to drag me deep into complications that I am not ready to battle?
As I stood to leave, the weight of the decision weighed on me. One thing was certain, though: I couldn't keep running forever. The past was a part of me, yes, but it didn't have to define my future. And maybe, just maybe, this new opportunity with Simeon was the way forward.
I took a deep breath, my mind reeling as I headed for the door. One step at a time, one decision at a time, yet finally it was like I was in control again of where my life was heading.
