The Secret Inside the Pendant 2

Sherry looked at her for a long moment. Then he reached into his coat and removed a small key. Rose watched him carefully. “What is that?” “Something your mother gave me.” Rose's eyes widened. “When?” “The night she disappeared.” He placed the key on the table. “She told me that if you ever remembered the rain, the fire, and the silver pendant, I had to give you this.” Rose stared at the key. Her hands began to shake. “What does it open?” Sherry looked at her. “I don't know.” “You never tried?” “I was told not to.” “By my mother?” “Yes.” Rose picked up the key. It was tiny. Old. And on its surface was a symbol. A circle crossed by a single line. Rose suddenly felt dizzy. She had seen that symbol before. Somewhere. Long ago. Her fingers tightened around the key. “I know this.” Sherry's face became pale. “Where?” Rose closed her eyes. The memory came like lightning. A room. A wooden desk. Her mother kneeling in front of her. A man's voice outside the door. Her mother crying. And then— “Rose, listen to me.” The little girl looked at her mother. “Don't be afraid.” “Mommy…” “If anything happens to me, you must remember one thing.” “What?” Her mother placed the silver pendant around her neck. “Trust the man who comes after the rain.” Rose opened her eyes. She couldn't breathe. Sherry was standing in front of her. “What did you remember?” Rose looked at him. Her lips trembled. “My mother…” “What did she say?” Rose stared into his eyes. “She told me to trust the man who comes after the rain.” Sherry went completely still. Rose slowly stepped toward him. “You knew.” He said nothing. “You were the man.” Sherry lowered his eyes. “Yes.” Rose's tears returned. “Why?” Sherry looked at her with a pain she had never seen before. “Because I promised your mother I would find you.” “And you did.” “Yes.” “Why did it take so long?” His silence broke her heart. “Because,” he whispered, “I thought you were dead.” Rose covered her mouth. The room fell silent. For the first time, Sherry looked as though he was no longer hiding behind his strength. He looked like a man carrying a promise that had nearly destroyed him. “I searched for you for years,” he continued. “Every city. Every name. Every photograph.” Rose's eyes filled with tears. “And when you finally found me?” “I didn't know how to tell you.” “Why?” “Because the moment I told you who you were, they would know you remembered.” Rose looked at the pendant. “And now they know.” Sherry nodded. “Yes.” A sudden sound came from outside. Both of them froze. Footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Someone was walking down the hallway. Rose's heart began pounding. Sherry immediately moved toward the door. He raised one finger to his lips. “Don't make a sound.” The footsteps stopped. Right outside. Rose held the pendant tightly. The handle of the door slowly moved. Once. Twice. Then stopped. Sherry looked at Rose. There was no fear in his eyes now. Only determination. He whispered, “Whatever happens, stay behind me.” Rose nodded. The door remained closed. Then something slid underneath it. A small envelope. Sherry stared at it. Rose's eyes widened. The footsteps began moving away. Sherry waited. Ten seconds. Twenty. Then he slowly opened the door. The hallway was empty. He picked up the envelope. There was no name on it. Only one symbol. The same symbol engraved on the key. Rose felt the blood drain from her face. “Sherry…” He opened the envelope. Inside was a single photograph. Rose looked at it. And her entire world stopped. The photograph showed her mother. Alive. Standing beside a car. Holding a newborn baby. And written across the back were four words: She never stopped looking for you. Rose's hands began to shake. “That's me.” Sherry looked at her. “Yes.” Rose stared at the photograph. Then she noticed something else. A second figure stood in the background. A man. Watching her mother. Watching the baby. Watching everything. Rose slowly turned the photograph over again. At the bottom, beneath the message, was another sentence. He knows you remember. The lights suddenly went out. And somewhere outside the building, a car engine started. Rose grabbed Sherry's hand. The darkness swallowed them. And for the first time, Rose understood the terrifying truth: Her past had not returned to her by accident. Someone had opened the door. And now, someone was waiting for her to walk through it. To be continued...
