CHAPTER 2: EVE

“Neoul you need to be very careful” Carl whispered, eyes following the Alpha. “Alpha Evan notices everything. We still need to find out what conversations he had with your sister”. “I’m just a young woman trying to survive” Neoul replied with soft smile, lifting the wine glass from Evan’s hand The moment his fingers brushed against the glass and Evan’s hand, a spark shot through him, a sharp current running through his veins. He gasped, startled causing the glass to slip from his hand, shattering on the floor. “I’m sorry” he said quickly, bending to pick up the pieces, but Alpha Evan stopped him. “Don’t” Evan said, reaching for a napkin from a nearby stool, he handed it over to Neoul. His voice calm but his gaze curious. “Are you okay?” “Yes, I’m fine” Neoul murmured, trying to wipe the wine off his dress. Evan immediately called someone to clean up the mess, then quietly poured another glass. He looked at his own hand as he set it down, frowning slightly. “This is the second time” he muttered under his breath. Neoul looked up “Second time of what?” he too wondered if he had also felt the spark or it was all just in his head. Evan hesitated, then forced a small smile. “Oh it’s nothing” His mind wasn’t still, he turned his attention to the glass in front of him, and this feeling was something familiar. He could remember about 3 days ago, he was on his way to merge an aligns with some packs from the western part of Greenville, his Beta was on his neck as they were running late for their flight, he hurried up across the corridor only to bump into someone then, a soft voice whispering, “I’m sorry” disappearing into the crowd of people, Alpha Evan turned around but couldn’t see anyone, no face, no scent, nothing but now he was feeling the same with Rhea although he was drawn to her on their first meeting; this was something else. The oddest part was her scent or rather, the lack of it. Every wolf had a scent, even human carried one but Rhea had none, yet she pulled at him like gravity. Evan carefully set the new drink beside her and took a seat, Neoul meanwhile was lost in thoughts. Why didn’t Alpha Evan make any move to ask Rhea how she escaped or try to kill her once more? Why did he look relieved to see her, was he not the one that took his sister. “Why didn’t you look for me when I went missing?” Neoul asked, testing him, pretending to take a sip from the drink. “I did look” Evan said quietly. “I even had Gabby check the security footage to make sure that everything was fine, you weren’t supposed to matter to me, but like I said you intrigue me and I tend to have noticed the silence you left behind” Neoul’s stomach tightened, none of this made sense, things did not seem to fit into the narrative anymore, his sister was missing and the only suspect was alpha Evan but here he was acting clueless about her kidnapping. “Thank you for the drink Mr. Evan” Neoul said. Standing to him feet, there was nothing else to get from the alpha. Evan smiled faintly “I’ll be waiting for your answer about my offer” his gaze followed Neoul till he was out the door. “This feels off” Carl voiced, also confused. “You are right,” Neoul replied. Either he doesn’t know where Narl is or he’s trying to play a dangerous game” he pushed open the door to the dressing room, ready to interrogate Eve. Alpha Evan on the other hand settled into his chair, uneasy, Rhea’s perfume still lingered in the air, sweet and distracting. His wolf growled softly inside him. “She’s human” he reminded himself, shaking his head. “Why do I want her?” But the spark he felt with her, he hadn’t felt for anyone for years. Neoul went back into the dressing room, “Eve!” he called out softly. But she wasn’t there. He checked the back of the curtains, the bathe, the hallway, but she was gone. The feeling, cold crept into his chest. He hurried out the back door into the alley where the security camera had last caught Eve and Narl together, the night air smelled faintly of rain and smoke, the alley was quiet. One would say too quiet. He walked a few steps farther, scanning the shadows. That was when he saw it; a blue shoe sticking out from behind a large trash bin, his stomach twisted, slowly he stepped closer pushing it to the side. “Eve” he whispered, his hands felt sweaty as he rubbed them against his clothes “Carl!” he said, his voice breaking “We have a problem.” ***** **** ** **** Neoul sat outside the door to hospital ER, his fist clenched; if only he had been faster, maybe she wouldn’t be lying there. The thoughts made his chest ache. A sudden warmth wrapped around his shoulders, he turned to see Carl, holding a coat with a faint, tired smile. “We are back to the beginning” Neoul said quietly, his eyes looked unfocused. “I can’t stop thinking about what my sister must be going through.” “That shouldn’t bother you” Carl said softly. “We’ll get back on track, I promise and it’s not going to take long.” The door to the emergency room opened, and a doctor walked out, both Carl and Neoul stood to their feet. “How is she doing?” Neoul asked quickly. “For now; she’s out of danger” the doctor said. “We just have to wait for her to wake up.” Carl reached into his pocket and flashing his badge. “Detective Carl” he introduced, “I’m in charge of this case” “Of course, detective” the doctor said “how can I be of help?” “Well yes, I want to know if you were able to ascertain what caused her injuries,” Carl although he had examined the marks in the ambulance, he still wanted to be sure. The before doctor looked around, then leaned in close whispering “Werewolves,” Neoul froze, eyes wide. “The patient has two distinct marks;” the doctor went on quietly. “One a long scratch across the back and another smaller one on her shoulder. None deep enough to cause harm or kill.” “Thank you so much Doctor” Carl said, shaking his hand firmly. When the doctor left, Neoul’s face darkened. “I can’t believe I doubted that monster for even a second.” “Wait,” Carl said, raising a hand. “We don’t know it was him. There’s no proof” “No” Neoul said, his voice low and shaking. “This was definitely him, he kept me distracted while he had his men finish her off. Because she knows something; something he didn’t want us to find out.” He stormed out of the hospital. Carl hurried after him, catching up as he reached parking lot. “Don’t do anything stupid,” he warned as he drove him home. “We can’t accuse him without evidence.” Neoul didn’t say a word; he just stared out the window, silent, his jaw tight. When the car stopped in front of his house. His thought were sharp and cold filled with only one thing. He would find his sister and make Alpha Evan pay.
