e had a powerhouse of work. The older men led the charge in all things, as was only right since this was their story we were exploring, their history, and Isaiah and Mom were their footmen, foot people. What is the gender-neutral version of that term?
While the rest of us were at school or work, Micah, Isaiah, and Mom took to some mighty work. They hung posters and contacted legislators. They met with county officials and held interest meetings in churches and at the county retirement home. Within a week, they had garnered the interest of a few hundred people—both white and black—in the Shady Run school. I had managed to write a B+ paper for Mr. Meade and eat five pieces of cafeteria pizza. Clearly, I was not the star of this show, and mostly that was okay. Mostly.
