15 O ur gathering at the school went late into the evening, and by the time we were done, everyone was exhausted, even the children and Charlotte, who—until then—I hadn’t thought capable of getting tired. But I suppose that much emotional pain and anger and joy can drain even the dead. We did make some decisions, though. Hard-fought choices about how to proceed. Some of the parents thought we should tear the school down, destroy the place where murders occurred.
